Celebrating the spirit of dialogue and discovery.
Mr. Éric Soulier - Counselor for Cooperation and Cultural Activities, Director of the French Institute in Vietnam - affirmed that Photo Hanoi '25 is a place to celebrate the spirit of dialogue and exploration - celebrating all the elements that make photography so vibrant today.
The exhibitions are curated by both Vietnamese and international curators.
Regarding the evaluation of the works submitted for the exhibition, Mr. Hoang Quoc Viet said that this year there were 10 applications, with over 1,000 photos. After evaluation, the council only rejected 4 photos that were deemed unsuitable.
"Most of the works demonstrate artistic value, reflect a humanistic spirit, and offer fresh perspectives. Four photographs were excluded because they were deemed unsuitable. For example, one photograph depicted the emotions of a father and son during their journey living in the capital, and included an image of them lying in a location where traffic laws were violated," Mr. Viet said.
Regarding the correlation in skill levels between Vietnamese and international artists participating in Photo Hanoi '25, artist Nguyen The Son, representing the organizing committee, told Tuoi Tre Online that he participated in organizing both Photo Hanoi 2023 and 2025 and found little difference in the artistic quality of Vietnamese and international artists at the Biennale.
In reality, it's clear that the starting point in terms of training and practice environment for photography in Vietnam cannot compare to that of developed countries. However, in art photography, the gap between Vietnamese and international artists is very small.
"There is a 'catch-up' between Vietnamese and international artists in photography, from traditional photography to digital photography, contemporary photography, conceptual photography, and especially contemporary photography," said Mr. The Son.
