New movie faces concerns of being similar to “Reply 1988”, Hyeri speaks up

Set in 1999, “Victory” revolves around the story of the Millennium Girls cheerleading squad of Geoje Commercial High School, where 8 members with unique personalities are gathered. Among them, the main characters are best friends Pil Seon (Hyeri) and Mi Na (Park Se Wan).

At the film's press conference held on July 10 in Seoul (South Korea), Hyeri expressed confidence in the character Pil Seon she plays.

According to the singer, Pil Seon has a classic and easygoing style, and has a similar name to her previous character Duk Sun in the drama “Reply 1988”. However, when asked if he was inspired by the drama “Reply 1988” to write the script for “Victory”, director Park Beom Soo denied it.

“I didn’t consult anyone while making this film, but there were things I wanted to avoid. Some people told me that I should write the script myself and change it later, but I was very confident that the character I created was completely different from Duk Sun,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hyeri herself also confided: “In fact, I don't see any similarities between my two characters, so I wonder what makes people think of Duk Sun.

When I first read the script, the character was so different that I didn't even notice the similarity in the two characters' names. I found out after someone called my name.

Maybe people feel the same because of the nostalgic atmosphere of the drama, however Pil Seon looks like a leader as well as a friend, or an older sister, who is admired by everyone.”

Previously, the female star confessed that at first she hesitated whether to accept the role or not because the script was so good.

“I was so captivated by the script that I initially turned it down, thinking I couldn’t do it. I was more worried about whether I could pull off the role well as the plot was so compelling.

However, after meeting the director, my doubts turned into trust. I felt that if I had the opportunity to do this job, I would be very happy,” Hyeri added.

The movie “Victory” is scheduled to be released in theaters on August 14 in Korea.
