Mr. Nguyen Viet Thang.

Nguyen Viet Thang shared his experience of over 20 years in the publishing industry on cultivating reading habits in children: “I believe that not only in this era of booming information technology and the dominance of visual-visual culture, but in any era, the role of reading for children and young people is very important and necessary. Besides providing children with knowledge, books help them access the horizons of human knowledge, enhance their understanding, and support their studies. More importantly, reading helps perfect skills, character, develop intelligence and emotions, train thinking, and improve communication skills for children, who are increasingly dependent on smart devices.”

Because reading is so important for children, choosing books that are appropriate for each age group is crucial. To select suitable books for their children, parents should carefully review the content and choose books from reputable sources. Low-quality books can negatively impact children's reading experiences, affecting their language and intellectual development later in life.

For young children, parents should choose books with concise, easy-to-understand content, vivid illustrations, and themes that are familiar and suitable for the child's age and interests.

For older children, parents can choose books with logical and clear content to stimulate imagination and creativity, and that are close to real life situations such as family, school, and friends. In addition, parents can also let their children read some comic books, life lesson books, and books that develop critical thinking skills. If a child likes a book whose topic may not be suitable for their age, parents should offer advice and explain why so that the child understands the reason.

I agree with the view that children should be exposed to books early and develop a reading habit as soon as possible. Therefore, even in primary school, parents and teachers should encourage and guide children on how to find books and the most effective reading methods. Children spend more time at school than at home each day, so in addition to academic lessons, many schools today have implemented effective reading culture and morning reading sessions. Children reading together and participating in competitions will be much more enthusiastic about reading, thus making books true companions for them.

In every family, parents should be conscious of the importance of reading and pass that awareness on to their children, sharing books among family members. Parents should schedule more time to read with their children, listen to them, and answer their questions about the books they are reading. In this way, reading helps strengthen the bond between family members, allowing children to express their thoughts and feelings to their parents.

I understand that more and more families are seeing the emergence of bookshelves in their homes, with many families consciously building home libraries and creating dedicated reading areas stocked with books suitable for all ages. This is truly a meaningful gift for children.

A society that wants to progress and develop must value books, build a strong reading culture, and encourage the spread of reading throughout society. This will create new generations rich in knowledge, many talented individuals will emerge, and the country will become strong and prosperous.

We must create a favorable reading environment and cultivate a reading habit anytime, anywhere, starting from the family, school, and community, so that children do not turn their backs on or become indifferent to books. This will contribute to the development of children's thinking and creativity, nurture their character, beautify their souls, and form a healthy lifestyle.

Schools need to incorporate more educational activities for students, starting from primary school, focusing on reading habits, guiding them on effective reading methods, and promoting themed reading. Criteria should be established for selecting worthwhile books, leading to a comprehensive reading list for each grade level throughout the school year.

Indeed, we need to seriously consider and reflect on how to support children in educating and training them to read, understand the value, and cherish books—the invaluable treasure of human knowledge.
