Associate Professor Nguyen Huy Thang: '10 doctors had strokes, 7 doctors had to quit their jobs'

About 70% of stroke patients cannot return to normal life. If 10 doctors have a stroke, 7 doctors have to give up medicine. And that is a big burden.

The above information was shared by Associate Professor, Doctor, Doctor Nguyen Huy Thang, Vice President of Vietnam Stroke Association, President of Ho Chi Minh City Stroke Association, at the ceremony to receive the WSO Gold Certificate in stroke treatment of Hoan My Saigon Hospital and the Conference on updating acute stroke treatment 2025 held on the afternoon of May 10.

"The worst burden of stroke is disability"

"Stroke is a global burden. In Vietnam, stroke is one of the leading causes of death. However, in my personal opinion, death is not the worst thing, but disability is the worst thing," Associate Professor Thang expressed his opinion.

According to Dr. Thang, even at People's Hospital 115, there were 5 medical staff who suffered strokes right in the hospital. This shows that stroke causes a huge burden on the whole society. It is also because of the burden that stroke causes that the World Stroke Organization (WSO) wants to spread stroke treatment standards to hospitals around the world, especially in Asian countries. Medical professionals will do their best so that stroke patients can return to life as normal as possible.

"Revascularization is considered the only treatment that can help patients return to normal life. None of the other treatments have proven that. If patients are not treated with revascularization, they have to accept the risk," Dr. Thang emphasized.

'Feeling weak, suspecting stroke but still hoping the disease will go away on its own'

Specialist Doctor Mai Thi Huong Lan, Head of the Department of Neurology, Hoan My Saigon Hospital, said that in the third and fourth quarters of 2024, the hospital received 179 stroke cases, of which strokes due to cerebral infarction accounted for 80%. The average time from onset to hospital admission was 16 hours. This is quite a long time. This shows that the community has not yet made a quick and correct assessment of stroke, causing the hospital admission time to be prolonged.

"When asked why they came to the hospital late, many people said they felt a little weak, suspected a stroke but still hoped the symptoms would go away. They waited 1 day, waited 2 days but still did not go to the hospital. Even in Ho Chi Minh City, there are still patients who prick their fingertips and seek folk remedies to find hope of recovery," Dr. Lan shared.

According to Dr. Lan, according to a survey by Hoan My Saigon Hospital, there are 5 main reasons why patients come to the hospital late. Of these, 50% are due to lack of awareness of symptoms or thinking the symptoms are mild, mistaking them for the flu, self-treating with cupping, finger pricking, or folk remedies. 30% are due to subjective psychology, waiting for symptoms to go away on their own, treating them at home until they become severe before being hospitalized. In addition, the remaining 20% are due to social factors such as old age, underlying diseases, unprofessional travel, traveling by personal vehicle instead of calling 115 emergency, not understanding the importance of the golden hour in stroke treatment...

Dr. Ta Anh Tuan, Director of Hoan My Saigon Hospital, said that achieving the WSO Gold Certification puts Hoan My Saigon Hospital in the top 5% of global Stroke Units and is one of 17 units in Ho Chi Minh City recognized by the Department of Health as having a complete and perfect stroke treatment process.

"Every year, the Department of Neurology - Stroke Unit of Hoan My Saigon Hospital receives more than 1,000 stroke cases, successfully treating hundreds of cases thanks to a comprehensive stroke treatment process including mechanical thrombectomy, thrombolysis, neuroresuscitation, neurosurgery and post-stroke rehabilitation, with a functional recovery rate of 65%," said Dr. Tuan.
