According to Major Mai The Kien, authorities determined that the motorboat could not approach the house where people were trapped, and there was a risk of the propeller breaking because the house was surrounded by a very high wall.
So he decided to tie the life jacket to a pole as a mark, took a deep breath and dived into the floodwaters to unfasten the buckle.
"After a long time, the middle pin got stuck. I had to kick it open, then dive down again to pull up the pin attached to the yard," he recalled.
Mr. Kien said the task had to be completed quickly because the mother and child were isolated in the house and could not swim. The distance from the yard to the gate was about 20 meters, and they did not receive any supplies.
Earlier that morning, Bo Ha Commune Police also mobilized a motorboat to transport a kidney patient to the emergency room in deep flood conditions.
Major Mai The Kien revealed that he knew how to swim since he was in the second or third grade, and then received further training when he joined the police force. "We all got on the boat with the same goal of helping our fellow countrymen get to safety, without causing any loss of life," he asserted.
Not only in Bo Ha, in recent days, images of officers and soldiers of Bac Ninh Provincial Police wading in floodwaters, going through every alley to carry the elderly, support women, carry children, and transport necessities have spread on social networks.
