Zhang Mao Hei inside the room "better than prison"
According to the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post , these tiny rooms cost 60 yuan (equivalent to 8.7 USD, about 210,000 VND) for 1 night and have caused heated debate in the Chinese online community in recent days.
Zhang Mao Hei stayed in the room for three hours and was unable to stay overnight. In a video posted on Chinese social media, it appears that the room had some basic amenities and was fairly clean.
"However, the bed is next to the toilet, making the smell in the room quite subtle," he said, referring to the unpleasant smell caused by the toilet.
The room has air conditioning; separate wash basin, mirror, coat hanger, kettle, ventilation fan, landscape painting and toilet just half a step from the bed.
Zhang said he found the cheap room online and was curious to book it. "I opened the door to the hotel and saw similar small rooms on both sides of the hallway. It was definitely an apartment divided into micro-hotel rooms," he said.
The hotel owner told the local newspaper that there was a high demand for the tiny rooms. The video has attracted more than 2 million views on bilibili and the same number on Weibo (a major video-sharing platform in China), with thousands of comments.

"The cell is even bigger than this room," one person commented. "If the guest flipped the bed over and slept on the other side, it would probably be less smelly," another wrote. "60 yuan for one night means 1,800 yuan for one month (more than 6 million VND). You can rent a pretty good room for that amount of money. Why do so many people choose to live in such a tiny room with a toilet next to the bed?" one person asked.
Earlier in 2021, Shanghai TV reported that capsule hotels had opened for business in the downtown area, charging 35 yuan per bed and using shared toilets. Local authorities said that the high density of tenants in the cramped area of capsule hotels posed a high risk of fire.
