In an interview with the New York Times , Ive confirmed that he is working with OpenAI to design a new device.
Jony Ive, who worked at Apple for decades alongside Steve Jobs, is known for many of the company's iconic devices. From the iMac, iBook, iPod, iPhone of the late 90s and early 2000s, to today's minimalist Macbook laptops, Ive's legacy continues to shape Apple's design.
Despite some controversy, Ive’s career has certainly left its mark on Apple. And now, Ive wants to design something entirely new with AI. Both Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believe that AI has the potential to create a new kind of computing device.
According to PhoneArena , based on the information shared, Ive and Altman may be aiming for a "super AI" device with the goal of completely revolutionizing software, AI can understand what's on the screen and has the ability to access any part of the operating system, freeing users from having to manually control it.
The new device could even use its cameras, sensors, and microphones to always understand context. For example, if you're considering calling someone, you can just pick up the phone and it will immediately place the call to that person.
Or the device can track when the user is about to go out, it will automatically call a taxi.... And its possibilities are endless.
But Ive and Altman aren’t the only ones interested in ushering in a new era of AI computing. Meta, for example, has spent years and billions of dollars researching AI-powered AR smart glasses.
Mark Zuckerberg believes that XR (extended reality) will be the future of computing devices.
Ive and Altman aren’t the first to work on a new AI tool. AI devices like the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit r1 have been released, but neither has left much of an impression, with the r1 even receiving negative reviews.
Ive's device is expected to shake up the mobile industry, as the iPhone did when it first launched in 2007.
However, not everyone is in favor of AI devices. Many people firmly reject AI from affecting their lives due to privacy concerns, or see AI as just a fad that will soon fade away...
AI is probably the only reason people will buy the iPhone 16, and Apple is trying its best to make the most of it. Ive and Altman will also have to show people what their device can do and why they need it.
Ive made the iPad a cult product, even though it was called the oversized iPhone when it first launched. So perhaps the legendary Apple designer has his hands full and we can expect something revolutionary in the next few years.
Jony Ive was born in 1967 in Chingford, a village in the northeast of London (UK). Although he started working at Apple in 1992, Ive's creative fire only really ignited when he met Steve Jobs in 1997.
He is considered a genius designer with a series of iconic Apple products such as iPhone, iPad, MacBook. Jony Ive left Apple in 2019 and then founded a design consultancy called LoveFrom.
