Many farmers in the province are implementing a model of raising eels without mud in cement tanks, bringing high economic efficiency.
Since 2019, the Provincial Agricultural Seed Center and the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center have implemented a model of raising eels without mud in cement tanks, feeding them with industrial feed. With new farming techniques, eel care is easier, the farming environment is clean, so the model attracts many farmers to participate. In 2022, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center implemented a commercial eel farming model with a scale of 275m2, with 4 households participating in Tuy An, Tay Hoa districts and Dong Hoa town.
The mud-free eel farming model in Hoa Tam commune (Dong Hoa town) of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Viet's household is deployed on an area of 200m2. The farming tanks are built of cement (each tank is 10m2), lined with sturdy plastic tarpaulin (the type of tarpaulin used for shrimp farming), and designed with separate water supply and drainage pipes. In the tank, bunches of nylon ropes are hung for the eels to hide in, the water level is maintained at 15-20cm. The surrounding tank is carefully fenced, ensuring warmth in winter and coolness in summer. Water is taken from a domestic well, pumped into a tank to dry before being supplied to the farming tank. Every day, farmers must monitor the activities of the farmed eels, change the water in the tank periodically 1-2 times/day to ensure a clean environment. In addition to the farming techniques instructed by the staff of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center and Dong Hoa Town Agricultural Extension Station, farmers must also regularly bathe their eels with diluted salt water or iodine disinfectant 3 times a month to prevent disease, and regularly change and wash the nylon ropes in the tank...
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Viet said: The model was deployed from July 2022, with a number of 12,000 eels, a density of 60 eels/m2. We use floating industrial bran to feed the eels, the total amount of industrial bran fed to the eels in 10 months of raising is more than 5.4 tons. Up to now, the eels have grown well, the survival rate is about 83%, the average weight is 310g/eel, the harvest output is more than 3 tons of eel meat.
According to Mr. Huynh Thuc Khoa, Head of Dong Hoa Town Agricultural Extension Station, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Viet's mud-free eel farming model was implemented by the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, supporting 35% of the breed and 35% of the feed. After 10 months of farming, the total cost of the model (eel breed, feed, digestive enzymes, vitamin C, medicine, environmental testing, nets, buckets, electricity...) was nearly 297 million VND, with a total revenue of more than 370 million VND (3,090kg x 120,000 VND/kg), and a profit of more than 73 million VND.
“This model is highly effective, contributing to the development of eel farming in the locality, taking advantage of idle labor and empty garden space to develop mud-free eel farming, contributing to diversifying aquaculture species. The model is visited, learned about and replicated by many households in the town and the province,” said Mr. Khoa.
