From June 9 to 16 in Ho Chi Minh City, the Vietnam Tennis Federation (VTF) will organize a selection competition for the Vietnam tennis team to participate in Davis Cup Group 3 in the Asia-Pacific region, which will take place in Bac Ninh from July 14 to 19. According to the VTF leader, the selection competition for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th places (2 places that do not have to be selected are Vu Ha Minh Duc and Nguyen Van Phuong) to the Davis Cup team aims to ensure transparency, objectivity and the best professional quality for the team. This is also aimed at rejuvenating the force, competing for tickets to Davis Cup Group 2, and at the same time evaluating the quality of athletes at the present time.

However, the organization of the selection tournament for the Vietnamese tennis team this time also created mixed opinions from experts. Mr. Nguyen Kim Cuong, in charge of the tennis department of the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department, said that some coaches commented that VTF has a professional board, a head coach and a ranking of athletes based on the results of competitions in the VTF scoring system, so it is not necessary to have a selection tournament, because it is both costly and not certain to choose suitable athletes.

Speaking to Thanh Nien , head coach of the Vietnamese tennis team Nguyen Phi Anh Vu said: "In my opinion, organizing the selection tournament is a professional and correct step by VTF to create opportunities and put faith in the young generation of Vietnamese tennis. We expect the new young faces to assert themselves, but we will not create pressure so that they can compete with a comfortable mentality and the best form. The selection tournament is also because the level of this group of young athletes is not too different from the time of Ly Hoang Nam and Trinh Linh Giang. We do not want to cut off the opportunity of any athlete, and at the same time want to have a squad with the highest form."
The upcoming Davis Cup Group 3 will see the participation of 9 teams including Thailand, Indonesia, Iran, Cambodia, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and host Vietnam. According to the regulations, there will be 3 places to compete in the Davis Cup Group 2 play-off, including the 2 top teams of the 2 groups and 1 team that wins the play-off match between the 2 second-placed teams. The 2 bottom teams in each group will be relegated to Davis Cup Group 4.
Coach Nguyen Phi Anh Vu said that with the list of teams participating in Davis Cup Group 3 this time, there are 2 strong teams, Thailand and Indonesia, so the immediate goal of the Vietnamese tennis team is to stay in the rankings, while trying to compete for a spot in the play-off group 2. 22-year-old player Vu Ha Minh Duc is the main player in the singles event, while Nguyen Van Phuong (24 years old) is in charge of the doubles event. 20-year-old talent Dinh Viet Tuan Minh, with good singles and doubles ability, is also expected to show his ability in the selection round to be included in the Vietnamese tennis team at the upcoming Davis Cup.
After the Davis Cup, the coaching board of the Vietnam tennis team will review the players' performance in the national championship as well as the Pro Tour 1 and Pro Tour 2 tournaments to select the team members to participate in the 33rd SEA Games in December in Thailand. With the priority on rejuvenating the team, it is likely that the Vietnam tennis team will participate in the 33rd SEA Games without any veteran players.
