Incision of tumor, suction of 2 liters of pus from woman's back

Ms. NTH (69 years old, living in Canada), returned to Vietnam to treat a lipoma in her back that had existed for more than 10 years.

Before coming to JW Hospital, Ms. H. said that she had undergone surgery to remove a lipoma at a medical facility in Can Tho. However, after only 2 weeks, the patient had to deal with a huge hematoma, causing so much pain that she could not lie on her back. The surgical site began to swell, forming a giant tumor on her back. The pain persisted, so Ms. H. went to JW Hospital.

On April 17, Dr. Nguyen Phan Tu Dung, General Director of JW Hospital, said that through 5D AI ultrasound imaging for the patient, it was discovered that the entire back area had accumulated pus, extending and spreading in the shape of the old surgical cavity. If not treated promptly, there is a high risk of infection and necrosis.

Dr. Tu Dung and the JW team performed a 5-hour emergency surgery. The doctor opened the old surgical cavity, drained all the stagnant fluid, and installed a negative pressure drainage system to control postoperative fluid. After surgery, nearly 2 liters of pus were collected from the back area.

After 7 days of post-operative care with the VAC suction system, the patient's back was completely flattened, no longer feeling throbbing or painful. The patient was able to eat, walk and sleep well again after many sleepless nights due to pain.

Recurrent lipoma on the neck of an elderly patient

Similarly, a female patient over 70 years old had a lipoma measuring about 15x15 cm in the back of her neck. The patient said that she had had surgery to remove the tumor at another facility many years ago, but recently the tumor recurred and grew larger, causing a feeling of heaviness and discomfort. The tumor not only caused discomfort and pain when moving the neck, but also seriously affected the patient's aesthetics and quality of life.

As soon as receiving the patient's case, Dr. Tu Dung and his team conducted a thorough clinical examination and applied specialized AI ultrasound technology to accurately assess the location, depth, tissue structure and boundary between the tumor and the surrounding muscle and skin layers, thereby developing a safe intervention plan.

The surgery lasted nearly 1 hour and was performed with the technique of completely removing the fatty tumor and the tumor capsule - a decisive factor in minimizing recurrence. The tumor was sent for biopsy after surgery. After only 7 days of surgery, the incision was dry, healed quickly, leaving no large scars. Ultrasound examination showed that the patient's skin structure had recovered, with no signs of residual tumor.

Benign lipomas but should not be subjective

According to Dr. Nguyen Phan Tu Dung, lipomas surgery seems to be a simple procedure, but if not handled properly, bleeding is not controlled and fluid accumulation is not thoroughly prevented, it will lead to serious postoperative complications, especially in the elderly.

Dr. Dung recommends that people should not be subjective with subcutaneous tumors. When seeing abnormal signs such as tumors growing rapidly, causing pain or affecting movement, they should go to a medical facility for examination and appropriate treatment advice.

“Many people are subjective with lipoma because they think it is benign, but improper treatment can turn benign into dangerous. The most important thing is to control the fluid, place drainage as indicated and closely monitor the post-operative period,” Dr. Tu Dung shared.
