Home robots "know how to do their jobs", clean the table, wash dishes and make coffee by themselves

(Dan Tri) - Start-up company Sunday Robotics is applying a novel training method to bring robots into real life.

From making coffee to cleaning the house

Memo, the latest product from Sunday Robotics, is attracting attention with its impressive ability to perform housework. With its pure white appearance, flexible hands and friendly cartoon face, Memo promises to become an effective "helper" in households.

During a demonstration in Mountain View, California (USA), Memo demonstrated the ability to meticulously make espresso coffee. Moving on a wheel base and adjusting the height flexibly, Memo performed each brewing step precisely: pouring coffee grounds, tamping, inserting into the machine, placing the cup and pressing the start button, then bringing a hot cup of coffee to the user.

"We want to build robots that can free people from doing laundry, washing dishes and all other boring tasks," said Tony Zhao, co-founder and CEO of Sunday Robotics.

Making an espresso, while seemingly simple, is a huge challenge for robots in complex kitchen environments, requiring object recognition, firm grips, and precise manipulation. To address this, Sunday Robotics has vertically integrated, building both the hardware and the AI model for the system to learn from.

In addition to making drinks, Memo also impressed with his cleaning skills, especially his ability to clear glasses from the table and load them into the dishwasher. Memo's dexterity was clearly shown when he could hold two glasses at the same time with one hand, one cup held between his thumb and index finger, the other cup held with the other hand.

This ingenuity comes from a new training method from Sunday Robotics. Instead of using traditional remote controls, the company has remote workers wear specialized gloves (worth about $400) that simulate robotic hands performing household chores.

The data captured from the glove is much more precise and is then fed into the AI model to control the robot.

“This is a very interesting variation,” said Ken Goldberg, a robotics expert at UC Berkeley. “The Memo design is beautiful and the data collection capabilities are much smarter.”

The Era of the "Internet for Robots"

Over the past decade, the explosion of AI and large language models (LLMs) has ushered in a new era for robots, allowing them to better understand context and adapt.

CEO Tony Zhao likened: "If you think about ChatGPT, they are trained on the entire Internet. But we don't have an Internet for robots yet. Collecting real-life action data (picking up a cup, folding clothes...) is how they build general intelligence for robots."

The home robot market is heating up day by day with the participation of many startups such as Physical Intelligence, Skild, 1x and Sunday Robotics.

“The promise of AI robots is not about doing somersaults or dancing, but about operating effectively in complex real-world situations,” says Eric Vishria of Benchmark Ventures (Sunday’s investor).

Sunday Robotics plans to make Memo available to beta testers next year. Like early personal computers, Memo will likely initially appeal to tech enthusiasts willing to put up with a little trouble to experience the future.

Zhao believes users will even be able to teach their own robots new skills. The biggest question, however, remains whether Memo can cope well in a real home with children, pets, and all sorts of clutter.
