Despite being 40 years old, Ronaldo still played impressively and enthusiastically in the 88 minutes on the field, before being injured and being replaced by Goncalo Ramos. Ronaldo himself scored in the 61st minute to help Portugal equalize 2-2 against Spain, after which they won 5-3 in the penalty shootout to win the championship.
Speaking to the press after the match, Ronaldo said: "I have won many titles, but nothing is better than winning for Portugal. The tears and the feeling of fulfilling our duty are wonderful. That is our country. We are a small nation, but with great ambitions. This generation of players deserves to win titles."
Talking about his injury in this match, Ronaldo said: "I felt pain during the warm-up. But to play for the Portuguese team, if I had to break my leg, I would do it. It was a championship match, I had to play and I gave it my all. I did my best. I helped the team score a goal."
With this goal, Ronaldo has 938 goals in his career and he is still steadily moving towards the record milestone of 1,000 goals.
Many world football experts believe that Ronaldo can play until... 50 years old.
ITV commentator Karen Carney said: "When you turn 30, everyone in football calls you old. But this guy (Ronaldo) is 40 and he keeps challenging us. Maybe we will see him play until he is 50."
