The newly released work of author Nguyen Huu Thai - Saigon from the Pearl of the Far East to Ho Chi Minh City tells the story of the formation of Saigon, mainly since this land was invaded by French colonialists and built into a modern Western-style city, since the mid-19th century.
Starting with the ambition of French naval admirals to turn Saigon into the “Pearl of the Far East”, the prosperous outpost of the French empire in Asia, going through the ups and downs of two world wars, the wars against France and the US, and then becoming the largest economic center of the country after 1975.
With the mindset of an architectural - urban researcher, a living witness of historical events that took place in this city over the past half century, architect - planner Nguyen Huu Thai (former President of the Saigon Student Association) introduced the planning - architectural heritage of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City from a social - humanistic perspective, leaning more towards history - culture than purely architecture - urban. With three parts: Saigon - the time of the Pearl of the Far East, Saigon and the first urban explosion, Ho Chi Minh City and the trend of forming a metropolitan area, the articles also record the contexts, events, and historical figures associated with those stages of development. The book is published by the Culture - Literature Publishing House.
