Nguyen Huu Thai's recently published work, " Saigon: From the Pearl of the Far East to Ho Chi Minh City," tells the story of Saigon's formation, primarily from the time the land was colonized by the French and built into a modern, Western-style city, starting in the mid-19th century.
Beginning with the ambition of French naval admirals to transform Saigon into the "Pearl of the Orient," a prosperous outpost of the French empire in Asia, it has weathered the ups and downs of two world wars, the wars against France and the United States, and then become the country's largest economic center after 1975.
With the perspective of an architectural and urban planning researcher, and a living witness to historical events that have taken place in this city over the past half-century, architect and urban planner Nguyen Huu Thai (former President of the Saigon Student Union) has introduced the urban planning and architectural heritage of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City from a socio-humanistic viewpoint, leaning more towards history and culture than purely architecture and urban planning. Divided into three parts: Saigon - the Pearl of the Far East era, Saigon and the first urban boom, and Ho Chi Minh City and the trend of forming a megacity region, the articles also record the contexts, events, and historical figures associated with those development periods. The book is published by the Culture and Arts Publishing House.
