Samsung has announced plans to partner with Google and Qualcomm to bring new smart glasses to market in the third quarter of 2025. The launch comes as Samsung takes inspiration from Meta's partnership with Ray-Ban to combine artificial intelligence (AI) features with wearable technology.
Samsung smart glasses specifications revealed
According to information from the account @Jukanlosreve on the social network X, the specifications of Samsung smart glasses have many similarities with Ray-Ban glasses from Meta but will be integrated with some unique features. Specifically, the initial production is expected to reach 500,000 units, using Qualcomm AR1 chip combined with NXP secondary processor. The glasses will be equipped with a 12 MP Sony IMX681 camera and a 155 mAh battery with a weight of only 50 grams. In particular, the product will use AI Gemini developed in conjunction with Google to support features such as gesture and human recognition, QR code scanning, etc.
Samsung's first smart glasses will hit the market late next year
However, the report from Maeil Business Newspaper does not mention the display of Samsung's smart glasses, suggesting that the device may focus on AI-powered features that rely on phones or external devices for interaction. This suggests that Samsung is aiming for a lightweight product with minimal hardware, focusing on phone interaction and cloud-based AI.
While Apple has incorporated augmented reality into its virtual reality glasses with Vision Pro, Samsung is looking to fill a niche between the two trends, focusing on lightweight and accessible smart glasses. Qualcomm emphasized at the announcement that these glasses will be the ideal companion to your phone, leveraging the power of generative AI and cloud connectivity.
Samsung's smart glasses will go up against a rival that has already made a splash with its Ray-Ban glasses, Meta, especially after the company updated them with new features including live translation and smarter AI support, while Google continues to develop its Project Astra smart glasses. Samsung will likely use the Galaxy S25 event in January 2025 to give a sneak peek at the new smart glasses, creating a buzz for its first foray into wearable AI.
