Ms. Nguyen Thi Sam (second from left) introduces exported supermarket bags.
In the bag sewing workshop, a group of women are still sewing the straps and body to create a complete bag. The women carefully and meticulously cut off the excess thread and stack the beautiful bags. Ms. Pham Thi Tuyet in Xom Loc village sews very quickly to complete the bag. She said she has worked here for 8 years, and her income is calculated based on the product. The job is also stable, so she takes advantage of the time to do housework and take her children to school.
Ms. Tuyet is one of many workers who are attached to Ms. Sam's family's sewing facility and have a stable income. Among the workers here, there are many disabled workers, elderly workers who are not qualified to work in the enterprise... who have been accepted by Ms. Sam.
While checking the quality of the products, Ms. Sam shared about the opportunity to come to the profession of sewing export supermarket bags. That is, when she was working for the Women's Union in the commune, she always struggled to find ways to solve employment for rural women. During the times she went on vocational training tours to transfer to members, she accessed information and techniques to bring the profession back to her hometown. She always thought that the products made must be safe, friendly to the environment and the health of the workers.
With that concern, during her business trips, she always researched the professions and advised the commune leaders to transfer the professions to the women, such as weaving rattan, nets, wool, and carpets... However, due to busy work and market fluctuations, the profession could not be maintained for long. It was not until she retired from social insurance that she started "starting a business" with the craft of weaving carpets. But after a while of production, the profession also encountered difficulties in output, causing her to struggle to borrow money to pay for labor and production costs.
Not giving up, she continued to learn the profession of sewing export supermarket bags. To develop the profession, she went to the old Ha Nam province to visit and learn. This type of bag is produced according to orders, is biodegradable, environmentally friendly, and can be reused many times, so the production process does not affect the health of workers. The product is exported to major markets such as the US, France, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan..., and is chosen by many large supermarket groups in the world. Therefore, there is no need to worry about product output.
With that advantage, the couple invested billions of dong to build a factory, purchase equipment and machinery for production. At first, the bag sewing job was not favorable because many women were not proficient in the technique. But she guided each step meticulously and carefully such as assembling the body, sewing the bag mouth, assembling the bottom, closing the strap... ensuring product quality from the beginning so everyone can do it and do it very well, all products meet standards. Up to now, Toan Thang handicraft cooperative exports about 10,000 bags/month, creating jobs for 144 local workers and many workers receive products to work at home.
Over 60 years old, Ms. Sam has overcome many difficulties and challenges to reap achievements in the field of economic development, contributing to enriching her family and creating jobs for hundreds of local workers. In addition to maintaining and developing her profession, creating jobs for many workers, she also mobilizes women to build effective economic models; helps women with financial difficulties to develop their family economy; gives gifts to children in difficult circumstances on holidays, New Year, and the beginning of the school year; supports the charity shelter fund, supports people affected by storms and floods in the Central region...
In 2018, Ms. Sam was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for her outstanding achievements in "Studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style". In 2021, she was one of three women awarded by the Vietnam Women's Union in the "Women's Entrepreneurship 2021" contest, with the topic of industrial processing of export supermarket bags - environmentally friendly products.
