To apply for a UK student visa, candidates need to prepare complete documents, submit them about 3 months in advance and avoid stating their intention to apply for a job or settle in the UK during the interview.
Four types of UK student visas
There are 4 main types of UK student visas including Student visa, Child student visa, Standard visitor visa and Study English in the UK.
In particular, Student Visa (over 16 years old) is for those who want to study at university or masters or doctorate level. International students can go to the UK one month in advance if the course lasts more than 6 months, or one week in advance if the study period is less than 6 months.
Child Student Visa (ages 4 to 17) is for those who wish to study at a private secondary school. Applicants need to have an invitation from a school in the UK and a sponsor.
Standard Visitor Visa is for people who want to attend a short course, English certificate or summer camp for a maximum of 6 months. If you visit the UK regularly, you can apply for a Long-term Standard visitor visa which is valid for 2.5-10 years and allows you to stay for a maximum of 6 months at a time.
Study English in the UK is for people taking short-term English courses of 6-12 months. You can stay in the UK for the duration of your course, plus 30 days, as long as your total stay in the UK is no more than 11 months.

Three conditions for applying for a UK student visa
If you want to apply for a UK student visa, you must meet at least three criteria below:
- Receive an unconditional invitation to study any course in the UK and have a sponsor for a licensed study route.
- Proof of financial ability to cover tuition and living expenses while studying abroad.
- Meet the requirements of education and knowledge, have the ability to listen, speak, read and write English.
Visa application
When applying for a UK student visa, you need to pay attention to your study abroad profile and interview experience. Documents in the profile must be A4 size, unstapled, unlaminated, flat and the words on the documents must be clear and easy to read. Financial records, academic records and documents, certificates must be translated and notarized. CV must be clear and transparent.
If the embassy sees your desire to experience a realeducation in the UK, the visa issuance will be easier. Therefore, international students need to have a clear understanding of the information about the school they want to study in the UK, their parents' financial situation, and future career orientation to answer the embassy's questions about the purpose of studying abroad.
When asked about your career orientation, you should avoid emphasizing your plans to apply for a job and settle in the UK. Your answers should be brief, honest and complete, and avoid giving a curt yes or no answer that will cause a negative impression.
Visa application time
The best time to apply for a UK student visa is 3-6 months before starting your studies.
The embassy processes student visas for 13-34 weeks. You should be on the lookout for calls during this time as the embassy may contact you at any time to review and verify certain information.
Visa fees
Student visa: 11-16 million VND.
Child student visa: 10-14 million VND.
With these two types of visa, the cost varies depending on whether you apply for the visa outside or inside the UK, and whether you are applying for an extension or an upgrade.
Standard visitor visa: About 3 million VND.
Short-term study visa: About 6 million VND.
In addition, you also have to prepare the cost of printing documents, records, financial proof, and health care surcharges.
Visa duration
International students can be granted a visa for up to 5-6 years depending on the program of study. For undergraduate programs and above, the period of study in the UK is no more than 5 years.
If you have completed a bachelor's degree course that lasts at least 4 years, your study period can be 6 years. However, some other courses such as Medicine and Architecture have longer study periods. Other programs such as vocational certificates and colleges, the student visa period is usually a maximum of 2 years.
After completing your bachelor's degree, you can apply for a student visa to pursue further studies, or apply for a working visa if you find a suitable job.
