The patient is a girl named TM (3 years old, living in Dak Nong province) who fell into the lake in front of her house and drowned. The victim was brought to shore by her family, then carried on their shoulders to shake off the water and then transferred to a local medical facility for first aid. However, the child's condition worsened so she was transferred to Children's Hospital 2 for further treatment.

Before these operations, Dr. Ngo Thi Thanh Thuy - Deputy Head of Emergency Department, Children's Hospital 2 shared information that parents should pay attention to when they accidentally discover a child drowning:

Parents should remain calm and quickly remove the child from the water. Place the child in a safe lying position and change the child's clothes to keep them warm. Quickly assess the child's respiratory status. If the child is not breathing, the first aider can immediately perform mouth-to-mouth or nose-to-mouth resuscitation if it is difficult to cover the child's nose. If the child vomits, place the child on one side and collect the vomit with your hand, gauze or a straw. Quickly take the child to the nearest medical facility.

First aid at the scene must be performed promptly, avoiding mistakes that make the child worse and delay the “golden time” for emergency care, especially in situations where the child has cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest. To avoid mistakes in the process of first aid for drowning children at the scene, Dr. Thuy emphasized:

At the same time, when participating in water activities, children need to be under the control of adults or experienced swimmers.

For families living near ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, etc., parents must always keep a close eye on their children. Avoid placing buckets, basins, or water containers in the house. In rockery ponds and aquariums, there should be additional protective barriers to keep children safe.
