One of the highlights in the environmental activities of the Women's Union is the emergence of creative and aesthetic models of waste collection and classification at the source, such as "Green House" and "Green Heart", which will be implemented from 2024. These are collection points for solid waste that can be recycled and reused. The purpose is to create a landscape and civilized urban appearance for streets, roads, and crowded places, while contributing to maintaining general environmental hygiene. There are currently 58 collection points in the localities: Ha Long, Dam Ha, Tien Yen, Quang Yen. Along with that, the "Pin's House" model is implemented in Tran Hung Dao and Hong Gai wards (Ha Long City) with a total of 20 houses.
Models related to the circular economy from plastic waste are also focused on by all levels of the association. There have been 6 models of "Women's groups producing recycled plastic waste products" established in Dam Ha district, Ha Long city, Uong Bi city, Dong Trieu city with a total of 67 members. Diverse products: weaving baskets, plastic baskets, brooms made from brick ties; products for teaching preschool children made from plastic bottles, straws, cardboard boxes. These models not only contribute to reducing plastic waste, prolonging the life cycle of waste, but also create a significant source of income.
The “Turning trash into money” model continues to operate effectively in 13/13 localities, with the participation of 167,430 members, earning over 1 billion VND from collecting, sorting and selling recyclable waste. This amount is used to support women and children in difficult circumstances, contributing to local humanitarian and charitable activities. Of which, Ha Long City has more than 450 million VND, Uong Bi City has 276 million VND, Cam Pha City has nearly 265 million VND, Dong Trieu City has 179 million VND...
The model of treating organic waste with biological products (composting) has been maintained and expanded in 12/13 localities of the province. By the end of November 2024, there were 9,640 bins/pits of composting. Organic waste from household activities, such as vegetable peels and leftover food, is classified and composted with microorganisms. This method helps decompose waste quickly, does not cause odors and creates a source of clean organic fertilizer. About 4,320 tons of organic waste have been treated, collecting about 370,209 tons of microorganisms. In Dong Xa commune (Van Don district), this model has been implemented since 2021, receiving the active participation of women's union members. Ms. Diep Thi Binh, President of the Women's Union of Dong Xa commune, said: When implementing the model, the Union distributed free packages of microorganisms, combined with propaganda and specific instructions for members in each village. Composting at home helps significantly reduce the amount of daily household waste, creating a source of quality fertilizer for vegetables and fruit trees, saving agricultural production costs; reducing the burning and littering of waste, and raising awareness of waste classification at source.
The models of “Women-managed roads” and “Women’s flower roads” continue to be implemented in many localities, creating green, clean and beautiful landscapes for roads and public areas. Typically, the Women’s Union of Ha Long City built two model flower roads with nearly 800m of planting more than 1,800 trees of various kinds; at the same time, invested in renovating the park area with stone benches and ornamental flowers worth 200 million VND. The model of “Train road, flower road” in Uong Bi City is highly appreciated by the community for its effectiveness in improving urban aesthetics.
Women's Unions at all levels also maintain the effective operation of many environmental communication clubs, such as: "Women volunteering to protect the environment", "Accompanying mothers", "Civilized women's groups/branches"... This is a space for members to exchange experiences, disseminate knowledge of environmental laws, and propose new initiatives suitable for each residential area.
