Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Vit Rakusan said on September 18 that Poland's ban on entry of passenger cars with Russian license plates is in line with the latest sanctions of the European Union (EU).

Poland’s ban previously only applied to trucks with Russian license plates. However, under the measure announced by Warsaw, the Polish government said the regulation now applies to all Russian cars, whether used for commercial or private purposes, regardless of whether the car’s owner is a Russian citizen or a citizen of another country.

Expressing support for Poland's move, Mr. Rakusan stressed: "According to the sanctions adopted by the EU, this is how countries proceed at the external borders of the Schengen area and border checks do not take place within Schengen."

According to Mr. Rakusan, the Czech Republic has only an air external border with the Schengen area. The official said that the ban on flights from the Russian Federation has come into effect and that from 2022, Prague has imposed an entry ban on Russian citizens with Schengen visas through this external border.

He also stressed that the Czech Republic was the first country in the EU to suspend visa issuance to Russian citizens, just one day after the conflict in Ukraine broke out.

Poland's measure is in response to a recent statement by the European Commission (EC) clarifying the rules regarding the ban on imports of cars and personal effects from Russia.

According to the EC, the sanctions apply to all cars from Russia, including those used by citizens for transportation and only temporarily entering the EU. The EC's regulations are said to be aimed at preventing sanctions evasion./.
