According to Bloomberg News on April 27, the popular online shopping platform Shein has begun raising prices in the US on products ranging from clothing to home appliances, ahead of upcoming tariffs on small parcels - the first sign of the potential impact of the trade war on American consumers.
Most of Shein's price increases in the Washington market began on April 25, with price increases on some product categories being significantly higher than others.
The average price of the top 100 products in the beauty and health category saw a 51% increase from the previous day, with some items even doubling in price.
For household products and toys, the average increase was 30%, with some notable products increasing in price by up to 337%, such as a set of 10 kitchen towels. For women's clothing, prices increased by 8%.
Online shopping platforms like Shein and Temu are facing tariffs of up to 120% on some items, as the Washington administration has decided to end the "de minimis" exemption for small parcels from China and Hong Kong.
Over the years, exporters have taken advantage of this exemption, which allows goods valued under $800 to enter the United States without being taxed or charged customs fees.
The US also plans to increase the fee per parcel for imported goods from May 2 to $100, and even higher after June 1.
President Trump recently claimed on the social media network Truth Social that there is “virtually no inflation” because of falling energy and food prices. But Shein’s move to raise prices in this market reflects the Chinese fast -fashion retailer’s latest effort to pass on at least some of the increased import costs to American consumers.
Temu and Shein saw sales surge in March and April, as Washington shoppers stocked up on items before tariff-induced price increases took effect.
Both companies announced earlier this month that they would begin raising prices in the US market alone.
Overall, prices rose about 10% at Shein in the U.S. from April 24 to 26, based on a sample shopping basket of 50 products from various categories selected by Bloomberg News.
During this time, seven of the 50 sample products were removed from the US listing. In contrast, Shein's UK prices remained largely unchanged and no products were removed from the listing.
Of the remaining 43 products available in the US shopping cart, 30 have seen price increases of over 10% in the past two days.
While widespread price adjustments took place on April 25, some products became more expensive.
Prices for dozens of top products in the women's clothing category on Shein increased on April 22, pushing the average price of the top 100 products in the category from $8.68 to $9.06, an increase of more than 4%.
