The trade in wild birds and animals used to be quite common in many pet shops across the country. However, recently, along with increased public awareness campaigns, stricter management, and improved community understanding, many businesses have proactively abandoned the trade in wild animals and switched to more suitable business models.

This change reflects positive shifts in awareness and action towards the goal of protecting biodiversity and preserving the natural environment.

Yen Phuc Bird Market (Ha Dong Ward, Hanoi City) used to be a place where wild birds were sold to cater to the hobby of a segment of the population.

Currently, many businesses here have switched to selling items such as bantam chickens, feed, and accessories, instead of selling wild birds as they did before.

Many businesses have signed a commitment not to buy, sell, or transport wild animals of unknown origin.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Tan ( a business owner in Ha Dong ward, Hanoi) shared: "Previously, I traded in a few birds such as bulbuls and warblers, but after being informed , I switched to trading in ornamental chickens, worms, crickets, etc. Later, if I'm allowed to sell them, I will make sure the birds have a clear origin and legal documentation."

This change is the result of the authorities implementing Plan 628, strengthening inspections and handling violations, while also promoting awareness to improve compliance with laws on wildlife protection. Many businesses have been informed of the regulations and signed commitments not to buy, sell, or transport wild animals of unknown origin.

Lieutenant Colonel Tran Viet Dung (Deputy Head of Ha Dong Ward Police Station, Hanoi City) said: "Previously, as a traditional cultural practice, bird markets were held on the 5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th of each month. However, through propaganda and persuasion, people have become aware and signed commitments not to conduct business at these bird markets."

In the first five months of 2026, the police force detected 527 cases, of which 41 were prosecuted, and administrative fines totaling over 1.9 billion VND were imposed, demonstrating the decisiveness in handling violations related to wildlife protection.

In reality, when the trade and consumption of wild animals are strictly controlled, the trapping of animals in the wild is gradually reduced. Prevention is not just about addressing a violation of the law, but also about maintaining ecological balance and protecting the living environment for the community.
