European Super Cup set to leave the old continent

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has admitted that moving major European club matches to the US is a possibility, while Spain has applied a four-team format for the Super Cup in Saudi Arabia since 2020.

The European Super Cup was born in 1973, with Ajax beating AC Milan 6-1 over two legs. Since 1998, the tournament has been played as a single match at a neutral venue. UEFA will make a decision before the next round of TV rights bidding. If approved, the new format could be implemented before the 2026/27 season, which will be the first time the tournament will be played outside Europe.
