As a final year student at the Academy of Journalism and Communication, while most of his classmates have already received their diplomas, Nguyen Van Hung still cannot graduate because of the foreign language output requirements.
“I feel quite sad and disappointed. All my friends have received their diplomas, but I cannot graduate at the moment. I am trying to study and retake the exam to graduate in time for the next semester,” Hung said.
Hung is not the only case of graduating late due to not meeting the foreign language output standards. At Hanoi University of Science and Technology, each year, only about 70% of students graduate on time. Thousands of students are expelled, fail subjects or do not meet the English output standards and therefore cannot graduate.
The school requires students to achieve 500 TOEIC or higher to graduate. In addition, students must also meet foreign language standards according to accumulated credits; the school limits the amount of study for students who do not meet foreign language standards or requires students to meet English standards to write their graduation thesis...
Vu Ngoc Lan, a student at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that many students at the school are behind schedule in graduating because they have not met the English output standards. She herself is struggling to choose a reputable, quality center to help her get a TOEIC certificate of 550 or higher.
Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, Head of the Training Department of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that realizing the role and importance of foreign languages in modern society, many science and technology schools, including Hanoi University of Science and Technology, have tightened English output so that students, even though they focus on professional knowledge, do not neglect learning foreign languages.
“Tightening the output is to remind students to improve their foreign language skills. In addition, this also helps them have a suitable roadmap, because foreign languages are difficult to accumulate in a short time,” said Dr. Hung.
Similarly, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Duc Trieu, Head of Training Department of National Economics University, said that in recent years, many economic schools have required very high English output standards.
“For the convenience of students, the school has also applied this regulation since 2017, which has been in place for 7 years now. The strict requirements are also a motivation for students to proactively accumulate knowledge over a long period of time,” said Mr. Trieu.
