Hand, foot and mouth disease cases increase

Since the end of April, many medical facilities in Thai Nguyen province have recorded an increase in the number of cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, especially during the April 30 and May 1 holidays. This disease occurs year-round, but tends to break out strongly in the summer, especially in kindergartens and childcare groups.

Children with hand, foot and mouth disease who show severe symptoms are closely monitored by doctors and given antipyretics and sedatives early to prevent convulsions.

Specifically, at the Department of Tropical Diseases of Gang Thep Hospital, the Department of Infectious Diseases of Thai Nguyen A Hospital and a number of hospitals in Song Cong City, Pho Yen City... during this time, dozens of cases have been received and treated, mainly children aged 1-4 years old. Common symptoms include: Fever, fatigue, sore throat, loss of appetite, more fussy children, blister-like rash on hands and feet, mouth ulcers...

Hand, foot and mouth disease is caused by a virus, transmitted through the respiratory tract, saliva, droplets or contact with contaminated toys or doorknobs. Adults can carry the disease without showing obvious symptoms like children but can still infect others. Therefore, do not be subjective; do not let children have a high fever because it can easily lead to dangerous neurological complications.

According to doctors, to prevent disease in children, it is necessary to wash hands regularly with soap, especially before eating, after going to the toilet; clean surfaces, toys, daily living utensils; wear masks when showing signs of flu, cough, fever. Isolate sick children for at least 7-10 days, only let them return to school when the fever has been gone for 3 days and there are no more blisters; closely monitor neurological signs (startle, drowsiness, lethargy...) for timely treatment.

Preschools need to step up propaganda, closely coordinate with parents in disease prevention work, and ensure a safe learning environment for children.
