Two airlines, Bamboo Airways and VASCO, maintained high on-time performance rates above 80%. Pacific Airlines, Vietravel Airlines, and Vietnam Airlines recorded average on-time performance rates of 78.5%, 70.6%, and 70%, respectively. Vietjet Air had a lower-than-average on-time performance rate, partly due to operating the largest number of flights.
Also during the past nine months, domestic airlines have canceled 0.7% of their flights, equivalent to 1,380 flights. The main reason for delays and cancellations is extreme weather in recent months.
In late September and early October alone, many airports in the Northern and North Central regions of Vietnam experienced prolonged heavy rainfall due to the influence of the storm's circulation. At Noi Bai Airport, the heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds and visibility reduced to less than 1km, caused numerous flights to circle and wait, or be diverted to alternative airports. For example, on September 30th, 194 flights were delayed and 34 were diverted due to bad weather.
The Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority has requested airports to ensure navigation and communication equipment is in good working order, and to enhance the application of high-resolution weather forecasting models to detect thunderstorms and strong winds early and warn flight crews.
Airlines are also required to proactively adjust flight schedules and provide timely updates to passengers via websites, apps, and social media, helping passengers plan their journeys accordingly.
