The appeal of winter tourism

As the first cold winds of the season begin to sweep through the mountains of Northwest Vietnam, Lao Cai gradually dons a new, mystical, and irresistibly charming cloak. This is the most special season of the year, attracting millions of domestic and international tourists to experience the majestic natural beauty and unique culture of the ethnic minorities.

The weather is perfect for adventures.

Winter in Lao Cai brings a cool and pleasant climate, especially suitable for trekking, mountain climbing, and exploration . Temperatures fluctuate around 20 degrees Celsius during the day, and can drop even lower at night, creating the characteristic chilly feeling of the Northwest highlands.

This is also the ideal time to conquer Vietnam's top mountain peaks. Fansipan – the "roof of Indochina" at 3,143 meters – has a modern cable car system that makes it easy for visitors to reach the summit, where they can admire the panoramic view of the majestic Hoang Lien Son mountain range and experience the feeling of standing on the highest point in Vietnam amidst a sea of floating clouds.

Those who love challenges can choose traditional trekking routes, hiking through mountainous forest paths to fully experience the pristine beauty of nature, such as Ta Xua Temple, Ta Chi Nhu Peak, Lung Cung, Ngu Chi Son... Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung - a tour guide in Sa Pa with 15 years of experience, said: "Winter is our peak season. The weather is not too cold, there isn't much rain, so tourists can comfortably explore without worrying about being affected by harsh weather conditions."

Fog, frost, and the thick-flowered bougainvillea – these are the unique features that attract tourists.

From November to February, Lao Cai enters its true winter season with dense fog covering all the highland areas. Sa Pa, Y Ty, Bac Ha, Mu Cang Chai, Tram Tau… seem to be immersed in a hazy world , where houses and trees only appear dimly through the swirling white mist. The mountain passes, among the four great mountain passes of Northwest Vietnam, possess a surreal and captivating beauty. This is a moment many photographers seek to capture stunning artistic images.

On particularly cold days, high mountain peaks like Fansipan, Y Tý, Mù Cang Chải, and Lao Chải are covered in frost and ice, creating a European-like landscape in the heart of Vietnam. Professional photographer Tran Duc Huy recounts: “I’ve been to Y Tý three times in December to photograph the frost. Each time I had to wait and was very lucky to find the most beautiful moment. But when I held those photos in my hands, I felt it was all worth it.”

In particular, December is the season when the Tớ dày flowers bloom brilliantly in communes such as Mù Cang Chải, Púng Luông, and Lao Chải, attracting a large number of tourists. Ms. Nguyễn Phương (Thái Hà, Hanoi) shared: “While the whole world is still cold, the highlands are being warmed by the Tớ dày flowers. I always make time at the end of the year to go see the Tớ dày flowers in Mù Cang Chải; I never get tired of it.”

Highland markets - a unique cultural identity.

Besides its majestic natural landscapes, Lao Cai also attracts tourists with its unique ethnic minority markets. Bac Ha Market and Can Cau Market are must-see destinations. These markets are bustling with people from the Mong, Dao, Tay, and Nung ethnic groups, who come from remote villages to trade agricultural products, brocade fabrics, and livestock. The lively atmosphere of the markets, along with the vibrant traditional costumes, creates a vivid cultural scene. Tourists can enjoy local specialties such as thang co (a traditional stew), five-colored sticky rice, and corn wine, while also shopping for unique handicrafts as souvenirs.

Ms. Nguyen Thu Huong (Cau Giay, Hanoi) shared: “I love going to the highlands in autumn and winter. The scenery is magical, the bare branches are covered with dew drops like beautiful crystals, and especially sitting in a market with a hot pot of thang co (a traditional stew), sipping fragrant corn wine… it’s wonderful!”

The local dishes at the market are always appealing to tourists.

Recognizing the immense potential of autumn and winter tourism, the local government and businesses in Lao Cai have continuously invested in upgrading infrastructure. From expanding and improving roads to building hotels and homestays with modern amenities to meet the growing accommodation needs of tourists, the province's Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism focuses on developing sustainable tourism, linked to cultural and environmental preservation. The goal is to make Lao Cai a leading autumn and winter tourism destination in Vietnam, attracting both domestic and international visitors.

With its magnificent natural beauty, ideal climate, unique culture, and well-planned investment, Lao Cai in winter is establishing itself as one of the most attractive tourist seasons in Vietnam. This is not just a simple trip, but also a journey of discovery, experience, and connection with nature and the people of the highlands.
