Recreating the face of a 9,600 year old human, the ending is shocking

After reconstruction, the face shows what Zuzu, a man who lived 9,600 years ago in Brazil, might have looked like.

“Trying to reconstruct what an individual looked like thousands of years ago is a way to bring them to the present day, to bring them closer to the public,” said Mooacir Elias Santos, an archaeologist at the Ciro Flamarion Cardoso Archaeological Museum in Brazil and lead author of the study. To do so, last year, researchers took dozens of photos from different angles of the Zuzu skull, which is currently on display at the Museum of Nature in Piauí, Brazil. Photo: @Mooacir Elias Santos.

They then stitched together 57 images using biometric imaging techniques to create a virtual 3D skull model, aiming to reveal the face of this mysterious and historically important man in Brazil. Photo: @Mooacir Elias Santos.

They also used computed tomography (CT) scans of the brains of living volunteers, and applied that information to adjust the skull structure by incorporating markers of tissue thickness, said study co-author Cícero Moraes, a Brazilian graphic artist. Photo: @I-MED Radiology Network.

“We adjust the skull structure to make the donor skull approximately the same size as Zuzu’s. When we do this, the soft tissue will follow this deformation/adaptation and create the desired face, compatible with Zuzu,” Moraes added. Photo: @Mooacir Elias Santos.

In the end, the researchers created two results, both depicting a man with a wide nose and lips. The difference was that one version included hair and eyebrows, while the other was Zuzu with closed eyes and no hair.
