Multiple accidents force prestigious cycling race to be suspended

(Dan Tri) - The Giro d'Italia bicycle race was forced to be suspended on May 15 after a serious accident occurred during the 6th stage, which was considered particularly dangerous.

The crash began when a Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe rider slipped and fell in slippery conditions, causing chaos among several riders. One rider was even thrown onto the pavement. Pink jersey rider Mads Pedersen was also involved in the crash but was able to continue racing.

Not stopping there, a protester suddenly rushed to the front of the race with a banner, almost causing another serious accident and disrupting the leading formation.

Among the injured were Adam Yates and Richard Carapaz, but the worst hit was 2022 Giro champion Jai Hindley, who was forced to withdraw from the race. The multi-vehicle crash forced the entire peloton to halt.

The incident occurred about 70km from the finish line in Naples. After a 30-minute interruption, the race resumed.

The organizers then decided to cancel the scoring and time of the race in this stage, keeping only the stage victory dispute at the finish line.

In an official statement, the Giro d'Italia organizers said: "No points or bonus seconds will be awarded at the RedBull KM or at the finish line. The standings will stand as they were at the time of the accident. No time limit will be applied. The stage victory will be decided in Naples."

Despite all the chaos, Australian rider Kaden Groves excelled in winning the stage.
