On the morning of July 9, the Tran Dai Nghia - Dai La intersection (Bach Mai ward, Hanoi ) was thrown into chaos when a white 5-seat car sped away at high speed, dragging a series of motorbikes along. The chain accident caused at least 10 motorbikes to be hit, many people were injured and scattered on the road.
Immediately after the incident, the traffic police arrived at the scene, directed traffic, assisted in taking the victims to the emergency room, and checked the driver. The female driver was later identified as Ms. NTH (born in 1975, residing in Hanoi). Through initial testing, Ms. H. had no alcohol concentration in her breath and tested negative for drugs.
At the scene, the front of the car was severely deformed, the airbags deployed, and a roadside tree fell and crushed the hood of the car. Helmets, bags, and debris from the vehicles were scattered. Many personal belongings of the victims were left under the car.
Sitting with his back against a tree by the roadside, his face still filled with shock, Mr. NNA (55 years old, a motorbike taxi driver) recounted the terrifying moment that only lasted a few seconds but haunted him all morning.
According to him, at the time of the accident, he had just received a ride from Cho Mo area, was taking a female passenger turning from Dai La street to Tran Dai Nghia street when he suddenly heard a loud engine roaring behind him.
“Before I could react, I felt myself being thrown into the air and falling onto the road with a loud bang. The car slid forward. At that moment, I really didn’t know what was happening, I thought I had been hit from behind by a truck.” Mr. A. said.
The strong collision caused him to roll many times on the road, about 3 meters from his original position. "I tried to sit up but felt dizzy and lightheaded. Some people ran over to help me up and helped me sit temporarily on the sidewalk." he recalled.
Although fortunately not seriously injured, Mr. A. said he was still in shock after the collision. “My hands and feet are still shaking. I didn’t dare take any more jobs this morning. I’ve never been in an accident like this before. The car was speeding in the middle of the street, and I couldn’t even see it in the mirror in time to avoid it.” Mr. A added.
As one of the witnesses to the accident, Ms. NPA (34 years old, an office worker working nearby) said that at around 8am, while standing on the side of the road, she suddenly saw a white car rushing from the direction of Dai La, the engine roaring loudly.
"Before I could understand what was happening, I saw the car crash straight into a group of motorbikes waiting at the red light in front. People screamed, cars crashed, some people were thrown into the air and fell onto the road, it was really terrifying," Ms. NPA said.
According to Ms. A., the car did not slow down after the first collision, but continued to go straight, dragging many other motorbikes with it, and then stopped after breaking a large tree on the side of the road.
“I stood a few meters away and my heart was pounding. When I ran over, I saw at least 5-6 people lying around, some with scratches, some unable to stand up,” she added.
At around 10am, the fallen tree was handled by workers, the scene was cleaned up, and traffic began to flow again.
The specific cause of the accident is still being investigated and clarified by authorities.
