These are machines that are very familiar to people who often travel or work in Singapore and European and American countries.

Passport scanning system has been installed at Tan Son Nhat airport.

Accordingly, when entering or leaving the country, passengers can easily scan the first page of their chip-embedded passport, take a photo in front of the camera, and then quickly go through the automatic gate to go abroad or return home. There is no stamp on the passport because everything is managed by the computer system. They do not need to meet airport staff, present documents, answer where they are going or coming from, how many days they will stay, the purpose of the trip, etc.

Speaking with Thanh Nien , the leader of Tan Son Nhat International Airport Police confirmed that the passport scanning system imported from Europe has been installed at Tan Son Nhat International Terminal since the beginning of the year, according to the project of the Vietnam Immigration Department to be deployed nationwide from the end of 2022.

Tan Son Nhat Airport has now installed 10 passport scanners, including 5 for departing passengers and 5 for arriving passengers. The functionality and usage of this system is similar to passport scanners in other countries, with information processing speed that can only take 10 - 20 seconds per passenger, helping to significantly reduce the time required to process security checks.

Images of thousands of people arriving on international flights to Ho Chi Minh City having to jostle each other in line waiting to enter Tan Son Nhat Airport often occur.

Initially, passport scanning will only be applied to citizens holding Vietnamese passports. Those who already have an electronic passport with a chip can be tested immediately, but those who do not have an electronic passport with a chip will have to register manually at the airport.

Specifically, passengers who want to use a passport scan, when entering or leaving the country for the first time, will have to register their fingerprints and some other personal information at the border security check area to synchronize with the national population data system. In the next phase, it will be considered to expand and apply to foreigners when leaving Vietnam, with the condition that full data must be collected upon entry.

"According to the plan, this passport scanning system will be put into trial use from the beginning of March, but due to waiting for the completion of the transmission system and the synchronous integration of data with the chip-embedded electronic passport system, the plan has changed. The Immigration Department is coordinating with other units and will deploy it soon in the near future," added the leader of Tan Son Nhat Port Police.
