(CPV) – Rescue operations continue after the most serious earthquake in decades struck northern Morocco. The latest figures as of the evening of September 10 (Vietnam time) show that 2,122 people were killed and 2,421 injured in this natural disaster.

Moroccan Health Minister Khalid Ait Taleb said on September 10 that the country has deployed all means to ensure rapid intervention in rescue operations. Each rescue area has about 100 ambulances with full medical equipment.

The Health Minister's remarks came during a visit to the earthquake-affected areas on September 10. The visit was in response to a directive from King Mohammed VI of Morocco to provide medical, psychological and social support to the victims of the natural disaster,

Earlier, on the evening of September 9, King Mohammed VI chaired a working session to assess all measures taken to resolve the crisis following the earthquake that struck several Moroccan cities on the evening of September 8.

Regarding the rescue work in Morocco, on September 10, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Hissein Brahim Taha called on member countries, humanitarian organizations and the international community to support the rescue work for victims affected by the earthquake in Morocco.

Mr. Taha also sent his condolences to the families of the victims of the earthquake and appreciated the quick response of King Mohammed VI of Morocco to this serious disaster. The 6.8-magnitude earthquake that occurred on the night of September 8 destroyed entire villages in the Atlas Mountains. This was the strongest earthquake ever recorded in this North African country.

The latest figures as of the evening of September 10 (Vietnam time) show that 2,122 people have died and 2,421 have been injured in this natural disaster. The severe earthquake shook an area about 72 km southwest of the tourist city of Marrakesh. In the village of Ouirgane in Al Haouz province with more than 450 households, most of the houses collapsed or were severely damaged. Desperate rescue operations were carried out on the afternoon of September 10.

Moroccan rescue forces are racing against time to find victims still trapped in the rubble. Thousands of people are living in the open after the earthquake./.
