Straw mushroom growing model brings stable income to farmers in Kien Binh commune, Tan Thanh district
In recent years, farmers in Kien Binh commune have applied high technology in production by mechanizing the fields, contributing to increasing productivity, profits and liberating labor. This means that idle labor in the locality has increased, especially after the end of the crop season. Faced with this situation, the Farmers' Association of Kien Binh commune opened a vocational training class on straw mushroom growing techniques with the participation of 30 farmers.
Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Kien Binh Commune, Tan Thanh District - Nguyen Quoc Thuan said: "Seeing many people from other localities come to rent land, buy straw to grow mushrooms, and have high income, the Association opened a vocational training class on straw mushroom growing techniques for people in the commune. Accordingly, the Association borrowed vacant land from a member and asked for straw from surrounding people for students to practice directly. With this teaching method, students were very interested. After that, the straw mushroom growing model was effective, bringing stable income to many people."
According to farmers, growing straw mushrooms requires low investment capital, mainly labor-intensive care, but the product value is high. The source of raw materials for growing straw mushrooms is taken advantage of from straw after harvesting rice. After being brought home, the straw will be composted with lime for 10-15 days, then farmers will pile up the beds, put in spawn, etc. It sounds simple, but to achieve yield and quality, growers must have experience and a firm grasp of the growth and development characteristics of mushrooms to be able to adjust the conditions of temperature and humidity appropriately.
Ms. Tran Thi Lan (Kien Binh commune, Tan Thanh district) said: “In my opinion, the most difficult step in growing straw mushrooms is the layering stage because it requires the worker to be healthy and have skillful and meticulous hands. In addition, the grower must also monitor the temperature to ensure it is suitable, not too hot or too humid, which will prevent the mushrooms from growing, leading to poor quality and yield. Currently, my family grows nearly 1,000 square meters of straw mushrooms, equivalent to 1,000 bottles of spawn. If the weather is favorable, 1,000 bottles of spawn will yield 2 tons of straw mushrooms, and if the weather is unfavorable, it will yield over 1 ton of straw mushrooms. With a selling price of 50,000-60,000 VND/kg, after deducting all expenses, the family has an income of over 30 million VND/harvest (about 2 months)”.
For a long time, Mr. Nguyen Van Thuan (Kien Binh commune, Tan Thanh district) also intended to use the straw after harvest to grow straw mushrooms, earning extra income to cover his living expenses. However, due to lack of knowledge and experience, he did not dare to invest. When the locality announced the opening of a vocational training class on straw mushroom growing techniques, he registered to participate. Currently, his straw mushroom area is entering the first harvest stage.
Mr. Thuan shared: “Thanks to participating in the Straw Mushroom Growing Techniques class, I have been fully equipped with knowledge through each stage of mushroom development. Previously, after harvesting rice, I often left a large amount of straw in the field. Now, implementing the Straw Mushroom Growing model, I take advantage of the excess straw, renovating the bare mounds to grow straw mushrooms to increase income. Moreover, the straw mushroom mounds after planting can be used as fertilizer to grow crops or sold to vegetable gardeners.”
The effectiveness of the Straw Mushroom Growing model in Kien Binh commune has contributed to creating jobs for local idle workers, increasing income, improving quality of life, especially helping the locality effectively implement the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction./.
