According to the trial, in June 2024, Lan was given a pistol by a friend (whose identity is unknown), and then Lan took the pistol home to hide. At 10:45 a.m. on September 25, 2024, Lan brought the gun and bullets in his pocket to a coffee shop in Xuan Yen Ward and was discovered and caught red-handed by the Song Cau Town Police (formerly) and the gun was confiscated. According to the appraisal results of the authorities, the gun was a military weapon.

At the investigation agency, Lan stated that he was given a gun by a friend, but the investigation agency could not determine the identity of this person, so there was no basis for prosecution.

Previously, in October 2024, Lan was prosecuted for two crimes of illegal possession and trafficking of drugs.
