Over the past few months, the artificial intelligence company headed by Sam Altman has signed similar agreements with the Financial Times, Business Insider owner Axel Springer, France's Le Monde, and Spain's Prisa Media.
The companies stated that while OpenAI will use Time's content to promote and train its products, the New York City-based publication will gain access to cutting-edge AI technology to develop new products.
OpenAI's Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, said: "We are partnering with Time to help people access news content more easily through our AI tools."
While some media companies, such as the New York Times and The Intercept, have previously sued OpenAI for its use of their journalistic content, these content partnerships are essential for training AI models.
These agreements could also provide news publishers with a way to generate revenue. Last year, Meta blocked news sharing on Facebook and Instagram in Canada after the country's Online News Act required internet giants to pay for news posted on their platforms. Canada and Google, in particular, had to reach an agreement to retain news in search results.
The agreement between OpenAI and Time comes at a time when news publishers are protesting against AI companies breaking web standards to block the collection of content for AI aggregation.
