The Liaoning aircraft carrier strike group has participated in the "Joint Sword-2024B" exercise in an area east of Taiwan island, a military spokesman said on Monday.
"On October 14, the PLA Eastern Theater Command dispatched army, navy, air force and rocket forces to conduct a joint military exercise called 'Joint Sword-2024B' in the Taiwan Strait and areas north, south and east of Taiwan island," said Captain Li Xi, spokesman for the PLA Eastern Theater Command.

The statement continued: "With ships and aircraft approaching Taiwan Island at close range from various directions, troops from multiple services engaged in joint exercises, focusing on air and sea combat readiness patrols, blockades of important ports and areas, strikes at sea and land targets, and joint efforts to gain overall superiority, to test the joint combat capabilities of troops under theater commands."
According to Mr. Li Xi, the drill is "a legitimate and necessary activity to protect national sovereignty and ethnic unity".
Earlier on May 23, the PLA Eastern Theater Command announced the start of the Joint Sword 2024A exercise around Taiwan, as well as near Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu and Dongyin islands. The exercise involves ground, missile, naval and air forces.
