Thai Nguyen provincial leaders direct efforts to overcome natural disaster consequences
According to information from the Thai Nguyen Provincial Hydrometeorological Station, due to the impact of heavy rain caused by the circulation of storm No. 3, at 10:00 a.m. on September 9, 2024, the flood on the Cau River continued to rise slowly. At Gia Bay hydrological station, the flood level was 12cm higher than the historic flood in 1959.
In Thai Nguyen city, from 3:00 p.m. on September 8, 2024, the rain gradually decreased and stopped completely, creating favorable conditions for command and implementation of flood response measures, evacuating people and property to safety.
The flood water on the Cau River continues to rise slowly, mainly due to the water flowing from the upstream area ( Bac Kan province and mountainous districts of Thai Nguyen province). With the current weather conditions, it is likely that the flood on the Cau River will soon peak and then gradually recede.
The recent rains have caused a historic flood on the Cau River. At Gia Bay hydrological station: The flood level at 1:00 p.m. on September 9, 2024 reached 2,850 cm, 150 cm higher than the level III alarm (BĐIII: 2,700 cm) and 36 cm higher than the historic flood that occurred on July 2, 1959 and is currently continuing to increase slowly.
The flood caused localized flooding on many streets, roads and rice and crop areas, isolating some areas in Thai Nguyen city and Pho Yen city, and some damages as follows: Regarding housing, 2,233 households had to be urgently relocated, 206 houses had their roofs blown off; 21 schools were affected; 01 cultural house was damaged. Regarding agriculture : 3,512.7 hectares of rice and crops; 70.5 hectares of forestry trees; 4 hectares of fruit trees were damaged. Regarding livestock, many animals had to be relocated, barns had their roofs blown off and were damaged. Regarding traffic, 31 landslides occurred; 06 cable hanging poles were broken and some terminal equipment was damaged. 87m of canals were buried, 01 transformer station was damaged; 58 electric poles fell, 1,050m of wire was broken. Flooding caused damage to many households' properties.
Faced with the initial damage caused by the flood, the leaders of Thai Nguyen province have directed localities to urgently count the damage and use the province's resources to promptly support people affected by the flood.
Rescue forces in Thai Nguyen province are helping people move to safety.
Thai Nguyen Provincial Party Secretary Trinh Viet Hung directly inspected a number of high-risk locations in the province, directing the Provincial People's Committee to continue to strengthen coordination with localities upstream of the Cau River so that forecasting work can be done early and close to reality; if necessary, urgently contact the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control to send experienced experts to support the province in responding to and overcoming flood consequences.
On the night of September 8, 2024, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thai Nguyen province Nguyen Huy Dung also inspected some vulnerable locations on the Song Cau dike in Thai Nguyen city and the Cha dike in Pho Yen city; held a meeting of the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue and related localities to promptly deploy tasks according to regulations with the principle of "human life is above all", concluding the meeting, he assigned tasks to the relevant agencies to actively and proactively deploy tasks according to plan.
Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Binh directly directed at the scene, together with functional units, People's Committees of districts and cities to deploy flood prevention measures in accordance with the direction of the Central Government and the province.
