And every day, the clacking sound from the old sewing machine table resounds regularly until late at night. For her, sewing is not only a source of livelihood for the family, but her son is also a testament to the belief that "although disabled, he is not useless".

Program God of Wealth Knocking on the Door No. 795 is a trip by God of Wealth (DV Dinh Toan) and God of the Land of Can Tho (DV Mai Dung) to Phu Phung commune, Vinh Long province to listen to the story of the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhin (1975).

Ms. Nhin was born with a disability, her two hands could not spread their fingers, and her two legs were small. After finishing 5th grade, she dropped out of school to help her family weed and work in the fields. At the age of 18, she became interested in sewing. Since then, sewing has become a close friend, helping her dispel all the complexes and self-consciousness caused by her unusual body.

Although her limbs are weak, Ms. Nhin still tries to move around so she can do most of the work herself.

At the age of 35, she married Nguyen Van Khoa (1977), and their family was more complete when they welcomed their first son, Nguyen Quoc Dat (2012). However, difficulties came one after another when Dat was diagnosed with a genetic disease inherited from his mother. The days spent in the hospital became a haunting memory for the family.

She confided: “My son is like me but has more disabilities than me, and he is also more difficult to hold than his mother. I gave birth to my son at 38 years old, he was disabled so it was difficult to raise him, he could be sick for 29 days in a month. When he was six or seven months old, I had surgery. When I went to Children's Hospital, I discovered that he had an inguinal hernia. After the surgery, a month later he had another one, and had to have surgery on the other side. The doctor saw that and asked me to register for surgery on his arms and legs. There were two bones on both heels, and the doctor chiseled them out. I was very happy at that time. Although we didn't have any money, my husband and I borrowed nearly 20 million VND and took him to the hospital for a month. We had high hopes, but after the surgery, he was delirious and unconscious, not knowing anything. A month later, he was infected all the time. When it came to his hands, the doctor didn't dare to do it, he was also in a coma and had to be anesthetized three times, so I was scared, so I stopped. When my son was like that, I felt both pity and fear and felt sorry for him. When I went out on the street, people saw that he had something. not friendly to me, so when my child was like that later, I cried a lot."

To support the family, Mr. Khoa took on more motorbike taxi rides, Ms. Nhin tried her best to sew. However, the money they earned was not enough to cover the many unnamed expenses.

Mr. Khoa said: “At that time, I drove a lot of motorbike taxis behind the bus, so I was very unstable and did not have enough income to pay for my child’s medical treatment. Then, thanks to a friend, I switched to tree towering and had a little more income. My wife was also in poor health, so I tried to work hard to take care of her and my child.”

The only joy in the midst of the difficult life of Ms. Nhin and her husband is probably Dat's diligence and studiousness.

With an innocent voice, Dat said: “I have difficulty holding a pen, for example, I can only use my thumb, index finger and little finger. I don’t study physical education. My friends invite me to play soccer, but I don’t play, I feel sad and a little jealous. But in return, there are subjects I am good at, such as history and geography. I use that as motivation, to cheer me up. Now I am in eighth grade, with eight certificates of merit. I will try to study hard so as not to disappoint my parents.”

But when they tried to work their hardest, both Ms. Nhin and Mr. Khoa's health declined.

Ms. Nhin said: “In 2015, my child was sick all the time, and we didn’t have a house, so they considered giving me 30 million to build a house. A few years later, the house was in disrepair, and my relatives gave me a bunch to build a house. Until now, I still owe 25 million. In 2023, I got sick. I had fatty liver, heart disease, stomach disease, fatty blood, and cervical spondylosis, so I was lucky. Two years ago, my husband got sick. He went to work as a tree tower builder. He climbed and stood for a long time, so his legs were swollen in the afternoon. He also had high blood pressure, so I had to take care of the family, and he had to limit it. At that time, I took on extra jobs, including plastic baskets and handbags. Because of my child and my husband, I was determined to do it. I was in a lot of pain at night, and I couldn’t sleep at night. But I didn’t tell anyone about my illness. I didn’t even dare tell my biological mother. Because I was afraid, I just went to get herbal medicine and took it all the time.”

Mr. Khoa continued: “I got sick again in 2023 with allergic rhinitis, I also had to ask for medicine every day, later I had a herniated disc, they told me to go to Can Tho Central Hospital for examination, they could do surgery but I didn't have money so I just asked for medicine. When I was like that, my knees hurt so much at night, I couldn't sleep. I had hydronephrosis at level 2, and I had a kidney stone, it cost 300-400 thousand per month. If I can't do anything, my wife has to go to work. My wife helps me fix my wedding clothes, I can't take her to work so she has to ride a bike but it's very difficult to ride with both hands. I'm also very worried at home! During Tet, we have to rush clothes, sew clothes until 9-10 o'clock at night. My husband and I also shared that with this disease, we have to try to work hard, so that we can have money to treat the disease and take care of our children's education. Because his arms and legs are too weak to do anything, we try to take care of his education so that he can have a job with others."

The breadwinner was sick and weak, but in 2024, Quoc Dat also suffered a brain injury. The family was in even more trouble.

Ms. Nhin tearfully said: “At the end of 2024, my child fell down on the floor while going to school. The doctor said he had a blood clot in his head and had to be taken to Cho Ray Hospital. A week later, he was fine, so I was relieved.”

With the hope of soon earning capital to treat 3 family members and buy sewing tools, Ms. Nhin is determined to participate in the challenges of Than Tai Go Cua. How long will it take for a skilled tailor to draw and cut patterns? What skills have not been revealed? And how much capital will she bring home for her family?!
