Bringing unforgettable emotions

“The Unforgettable Song” is a story about people who have gone through the loss of war. Right from the first lyrics of the song “The Unforgettable Song”, listeners feel moved by the very impressive lyrics. Every time the song plays, listeners are immersed in the heroic memories of the country in the past and are more tormented by their responsibilities: “There is a song that I will never forget, it is the song of my country that never has a moment of peace/There is a song that I will never forget, it is the song of a mother lulling her child to sleep every night/The song I will never forget, I will not forget, the hard days/The song I will never forget, I will not forget, my worn-out heels marching hurriedly/Being friends with the moon, sitting with a gun, watching the stars at night…” .

The three words “I will not forget” are repeated many times in the song, falling into the highest pitch, piercing the listener’s heart like an awakening, a reminder of humanity and the meaning of life. The song also begins with a very impressive sentence: “There is a song that will never be forgotten…” and is repeated many times. Musician Pham Minh Tuan's real name is Pham Van Thanh, from Nam Dinh , born in 1942 in Cambodia. At the age of 18, he returned to the country to join the Liberation Art Troupe, directly fought and experienced many hardships on the battlefields of the South. "Bai ca khong quen" is a song written for the film of the same name by the late director Nguyen Van Thong, which premiered in 1982. However, "Bai ca khong quen" by musician Pham Minh Tuan has gone beyond the film, becoming a song that lives forever.

The diary written in music

Sharing about the historical context and the reason for composing “Unforgettable Song”, musician Pham Minh Tuan said that during the years of participating in the battlefield, he had to witness many sacrifices of his teammates, comrades, and compatriots. “Unforgettable Song”, the musician wrote for all the sacrifices of the heroic sons for the Fatherland. Because for him, “Unforgettable Song” is like a musical diary recording the heroic years of him and his comrades. The lyrics and melody are like a confession, self-questioning, self-blaming, and at the same time reminding everyone of a difficult period that we are not allowed to forget.

The war has long passed in the joy of victory and pride of the nation, but the immense pain left by the war cannot be compensated. Musician Pham Minh Tuan has put all those feelings and emotions into his work, talking to himself about those fierce days of war. The work is a song containing lingering moods and intense emotions. There are things that he thought he had forgotten but are firmly attached to his subconscious with a soul filled with memories and moods dominated by many different levels of joy and sadness.

The song leaves profound messages

According to musician Pham Minh Tuan, the song “Unforgettable Song” is a reminder for him and his comrades who were lucky enough to return to live in peace to live worthy of those who fell for national independence. He recalls the heroic memories of carrying backpacks and guns on their shoulders, fighting to the death on all the battlefields of the South…

The simple and sacred message that musician Pham Minh Tuan sent and wanted to send, reminding the generations of children born and raised in peacetime is that they need to know the pain of war and must cherish peace, the meaning of independence, national unity, the love of teammates, comrades, and compatriots every time the event of April 30th is mentioned.

The young generation born when the country has been silent, fortunate to enjoy moments of peace, should never forget all that their ancestors fought hard for their homeland, bravely sacrificed for the country, to remember and show gratitude, to never forget those heroic, sacred memories. In the history of Vietnamese revolutionary music, there are gains and losses in personal lives mixed with joys and common pains to create songs full of warm love for people and love for the country.

With “Unforgettable Song”, musician Pham Minh Tuan sang with all his heart, sang for his homeland, for his comrades and for his loved ones.
