The 19th Asian Games men's football competition has 23 teams, divided into 6 groups (5 groups of 4 teams and 1 group of 3 teams) playing in a round robin to select the 2 best teams in each group and the 4 third-placed teams with the best results to enter the round of 16. Falling into a difficult group with the participation of 2 representatives from the 2 leading football countries in the continent, Iran and Saudi Arabia, the Vietnamese Olympic team understands that a victory against the weakest opponent in the group, Mongolia, is a must for the goal of moving on.

Vietnam Olympic team lineup

So it was no surprise when coach Hoang Anh Tuan launched a strong attacking lineup with the participation of strikers Quoc Viet, Thanh Nhan, midfielders Dinh Bac, Xuan Tien, Khuat Van Khang, along with other familiar names such as Duc Phu, Duc Viet, Duc Anh, Nguyen Hoang, Manh Hung and goalkeeper Quan Van Chuan. The determination of Olympic Vietnam was realized in the 3rd minute. Receiving a pass from the home field, striker Quoc Viet comfortably received the ball, handled it a few times before decisively finishing with his left foot to defeat the opposing goalkeeper.

Although the Mongolian Olympic team played simply, they had better physique and played quite "fiercely". After that, the Vietnamese Olympic team attacked more on both left wings but the second goal came in the middle. In the 32nd minute, Quoc Viet fired a shot from more than 20m away, the ball hit an opponent's foot and flew towards the goal, leaving the Mongolian goalkeeper helpless, raising the score to 2-0. The first half of the Vietnamese Olympic team ended with Van Khang's goal to raise the score to 3-0 after a run down the left wing in the 41st minute.

Quoc Viet opened the score

Right at the beginning of the second half, Olympic Mongolia unexpectedly scored an equalizer. Thai Son lost the ball dangerously in the middle of the field, thereby helping Mongolia organize an attack and number 9 Temulen coolly defeated Van Chuan in a face-off. However, Olympic Mongolia's joy did not last long when in the 64th minute, Olympic Vietnam established a 3-goal advantage. Substitute Minh Trong broke the offside trap, rushed down the left wing, then passed the ball back to Nguyen Hoang to score, raising the score to 4-1.

In the remaining time of the second half, Olympic Vietnam attacked a lot and created many scoring opportunities but Nguyen Hoang, Quoc Viet and Vi Hao could not take advantage. Unable to score more goals, Olympic Vietnam conceded the second goal in the last minute of the match.

The white shirt players had an easy victory on the opening day.

Defeating Olympic Mongolia 4-2, the Vietnamese Olympic team temporarily rose to the top of Group B. The next challenge for coach Hoang Anh Tuan and his team is the match against Olympic Iran on September 21 and Saudi Arabia on September 24.
