In a society where human value is often measured by productivity, job position or bank account number, voluntarily not going to work can easily make others think you are shirking responsibility, useless or lazy. However, in recent years, a new trend has emerged, which is “happy unemployment”. Instead of feeling depressed and in crisis, many people choose to actively… quit their jobs, actively become unemployed and be happy about it.

According to Collins dictionary, “funemployment” is a combination of the words “fun” and “unemployment”. This is also the word used to describe the state of enjoying time off work in the true sense. At first hearing, “fun unemployment” seems like a paradox. But it is the real story of many people, especially young people.
“Funemployment” is used to describe people who actively and happily enjoy their time off after leaving their jobs. They do not try to find a new job as soon as possible. Instead, these people want to enjoy their free time by traveling , participating in recreational activities or simply spending time with themselves and their families. They give up a stable job, a good salary, even a high position to find leisure, peace and meaning in life.
In reality, not everyone quits their job because they are tired or because the job is not what they want. Many people simply realize that the price of trading tens of millions of dong a month is health, time with family, and weekends that are never really off. They realize that they are living to work, not working to live.
I have a friend who is over 40 years old and her agency has just merged. In the near future, her agency will also be moving to a new location. Therefore, she chose to retire early and feels comfortable with her choice. She confided: "Now, I have more time for my family and children. Because my husband often works away from home, I prioritize my children." So, instead of worrying and being sad, my friend chose "happy unemployment". That is, she proactively stopped her current job to take time to rest and refresh herself. Of course, to have that peace of mind, she must be well prepared mentally and financially .
“Happy unemployment” is not laziness. On the contrary, many of them still work, but in their own way: writing, growing vegetables, teaching online, making crafts, selling online... What used to be considered trivial work has now become a source of life, both materially and spiritually.
When we are “happily unemployed”, we no longer live in a race for achievement, but instead move on to a journey of self- discovery . Of course, to be unemployed and still be happy requires many factors such as: financial reserves, support from family or community, adaptability and especially the courage to live differently. This is not an easy path, but it is not far away either.
Perhaps the most encouraging thing about this trend is not that many people are quitting their jobs, but that they dare to ask the question: What do I live for? I think that in a world that always pushes people to run faster and do more, stopping is sometimes the way for us to move forward.
