My teacher taught me the meaning of the five-fruit tray on Tet holiday.

Many teachers "thoroughly" instill the spirit in students before Tet holiday: Put down your phone, help your parents with housework to have a happy Tet holiday!

"Teacher, I successfully made pickled shallots...!"

Ms. TTH, a high school math teacher, shared her experience in giving "quality" Tet homework: "Every year, before Tet holiday, I let my homeroom students watch clips on how to prepare Tet dishes, such as wrapping banh tet, cooking braised pork and eggs, bitter melon stuffed with meat, pickled radish... After watching, I tell my students to prepare a dish at home to treat their families during Tet. When they're done, take a picture of the product and send it to me."

Surprisingly, after only a few days, many students submitted their work. “Some told me about cleaning the house; some told me about helping their mother sell goods...”, said Ms. TTH. One student told her in an excited mood because he had successfully made pickled onions for the first time: “I can’t wait, teacher. If it’s like what people said in the clip, I can eat it in about three days. The pickled onions I made have a distinctive aroma.”

Teacher TTH asked if there was any difficulty in doing it, and the student honestly confessed with wrinkled hands due to lack of experience: "Yes, I found it very easy, teacher. The only thing is that when peeling onions and pickled onions, it took me so long that my hands were all wrinkled, teacher!"

The author of this article has also “ordered Tet work” for students for many years. And every year, the students “submit assignments” with many meaningful products. In the context that most students nowadays just put down their bags and pick up their phones, lazy to help their families, products like this are “good things” that students can do during Tet.

My teacher taught me the meaning of the five-fruit tray.

I remember when I was in high school, my homeroom teacher taught me about the meaning of the five-fruit tray. If you ask students today about this, most of them don't know or have never heard of it.

The teacher said that the five-fruit tray is an indispensable thing during Tet, carrying a very profound meaning. Five here means five colors. According to Buddhist books, in the Vu Lan Bon Sutra, Maudgalyayana prepared a plate of five-colored fruits (five fruits) to offer to the monks. This is one of the ways that Buddha showed Maudgalyayana to save his mother from the realm of hungry ghosts.

Buddhists consider the five-colored fruit to symbolize the five good roots, including: Wisdom root (i.e., clarity); Mindfulness root (i.e., remembering); Concentration root (a mind free from distraction); Diligence root (a persistent will); and Faith root (i.e., belief).

Lessons on the five-fruit tray help students better understand the tradition of celebrating Tet

According to Eastern culture, my teacher said, the fruit tray also represents the five elements: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. These are the basic elements that exist in all things that make up the universe.

In addition, there is also a belief that the way the five-fruit tray is displayed on Tet holiday also symbolizes the five blessings: wealth, luxury, longevity, health and peace.
