Strengthening solidarity
The Ho Chi Minh City Journalists Association Football Tournament - Thai Son Nam Cup 2025 will take place on the morning of June 28 at Tao Dan Stadium (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City). This is a traditional playground, a football festival for journalists in the City named after Uncle Ho for nearly 20 years.
From a small tournament in the early years, the tournament has now been upgraded, expanded in scale and received a large response from journalists. From a playground originally reserved for men, in recent years, the tournament has expanded to include matches for women.
The tournament is one of the activities to carry out the campaign "All people exercise following the example of great Uncle Ho". Through the matches, it contributes to promoting the movement of physical training and sports among cadres, employees, reporters and editors.
Thereby creating a playground, improving physical fitness, spiritual and cultural life, enhancing exchange and learning among journalists. Reporter Le Hoang Giang, Dan Viet Newspaper shared: “I have participated in the tournament for more than 10 years, since I first started my career. Thanks to competing in the tournament, I have more relationships, met and learned from the experiences of my seniors. This helps a lot in my work”.
This year, the tournament continues to have the participation of 12 teams, including familiar units that have been associated with the tournament since the first year, such as: HTV , VTV , Thanh Nien Newspaper, Tuoi Tre Newspaper... Taking place on the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, the tournament promises to contribute many exciting matches and become a real football festival for journalists in the City named after Uncle Ho.
Previously, the Vietnam Journalists Association and the Ho Chi Minh City Journalists Association also successfully organized the 2025 "Proud of the City I Love" 2025 walking and running race on the central streets of the city, attracting nearly 6,000 people, including nearly 1,000 athletes who are journalists, reporters, editors, and journalists working at Ho Chi Minh City and Central press agencies, local Journalists Associations, students of journalism and communication faculties of universities...
Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association Tran Trong Dung affirmed that this is a “once in a century” tournament, the first time the Vietnam Journalists Association has organized it in Vietnam in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular, to honor the spirit of solidarity and heroic fighting tradition of the nation, while also praising and expressing gratitude for the silent but extremely great contributions of the team of journalists.
Connecting Generations
The year 2025 marks the 100-year glorious journey of Vietnam's revolutionary press and is also the year the "Ho Chi Minh City Journalists" Sports Festival marks a new turning point, bringing Pickleball - a modern and dynamic sport - into the competition program for the first time (alongside tennis).
The sports festival was successfully held in District 8 (tennis) and Thu Duc City (Pickleball), gathering more than 150 players from 25 press units, contributing to intense competitions, providing an opportunity to practice health and strengthen solidarity and professional exchange.
Veteran journalist Hoang Ha of Thanh Nien Newspaper, who has many years of experience in sports activities of Ho Chi Minh City press, said: “I believe that the younger generation will be very excited about new sports like Pickleball, because it is both dynamic and friendly. In the context of journalism changing strongly in both technology and working methods, maintaining connections between generations of journalists is becoming more and more important.
Healthy sports playgrounds like this will be a bridge to help young reporters and editors integrate into the professional community naturally and effectively. Through that, they learn team spirit, a sense of sharing and pride in the profession, essential factors to maintain the flame of journalism in the context of integration and innovation."
Reporter Phan Dang Bao of Saigon Entrepreneur Magazine, a young writer who participated in the Sports Festival for the first time, expressed: “Pickleball is a new sport but it is quite easy to play. Knowing that this year's Sports Festival organized Pickleball for the first time, my colleagues and I tried to practice and play. In the past, there have been many Pickleball tournaments in Ho Chi Minh City, but it will certainly be more meaningful when this sport is organized exclusively for journalists to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day.”
Along with Pickleball, a new sport called Chinese Chess is also being played by journalists in Ho Chi Minh City on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day. The VOH Chinese Chess Tournament - RoyalChess Cup 2025 took place in Phu Nhuan District, with the participation of nearly 50 players who are reporters, editors and press officers from 12 units in Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces. Chinese Chess or Pickleball are new and quite versatile sports, suitable for the flexible qualities of today's journalists.
Therefore, journalists always need to be quick and adaptable in their work, and that is also clearly shown in the competitions of these sports. Not just a simple sports tournament, this is also an opportunity for journalists, from experienced writers to young reporters, to relax, reminisce, and together spread the spirit of humanity, solidarity and creativity that journalism has always preserved for a century.
Reporter Phan Hoang Linh, Ho Chi Minh City People's Radio, shared: "The tournament is not only for competition, but also a valuable opportunity for our young generation to meet and learn from our predecessors - veteran journalists whom we have only known through articles or stories. Tournaments like this have created a useful and healthy playground for us. This is not only an opportunity to meet and exchange, but also an opportunity for journalists to sit together, chat, and share happy and sad memories during their long career."
