Long My town strongly develops agricultural economy

Việt NamViệt Nam02/10/2023

With the goal of increasing people's income, in recent times, Long My town has focused on implementing many solutions, including encouraging effective production models and promoting the development of cooperatives and cooperative groups.

Mr. Le Hoang Duyen (wearing a hat) is strongly developing the farming of snakehead fish.

Develop strengths

Coming to Long Binh commune, Long My town, everyone knows about the freshwater fish farming model of Mr. Le Hoang Duyen, one of the 100 typical farmers nationwide who won the title of Excellent Vietnamese Farmer 2023 voted by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union .

Driving on a straight road through the rice fields, we came across Mr. Duyen’s farm. It was a large, well-invested plot of land with individual ponds, lighting systems, water lines and straight roads to drive to the fish ponds.

Talking to us, Mr. Duyen said that the freshwater fish farm is about 7.5 hectares wide with 17 ponds, most of which are used to raise striped catfish, the rest are striped snakehead fish, yellow catfish, perch, snakehead fish, etc. In addition, he also owns 6 hectares of rice. For this old farmer, in addition to taking advantage of local soil and water resources for farming, applying new production methods that bring high efficiency is always his priority. Talking about his secret, Mr. Duyen shared that every profession has its own difficulties, but the important thing is to dare to innovate. Transforming agricultural production thinking to agricultural economic thinking, from market search to market research, linking to stable output.

Although raising many types of fish, instead of raising them together, Mr. Duyen raises them separately in separate ponds, only raising striped snakehead fish with snakehead fish. According to him, this will avoid price drops and passive capital turnover. With this method, each year Mr. Duyen brings about 200 tons of fish to the market through traders.

“If our Hau Giang snakehead fish brand is promoted, then the demand increases, and the fish has a good price, then we farmers will stick with it for a long time. There are already snakehead fish products, made into cakes, dried fish, and boneless fish on the market, I plan to prepare a process to make more delicious dishes to create my own brand. Currently, the output and price of snakehead fish are stable, if it is like this, we will get rich…”, Mr. Le Hoang Duyen excitedly said.

Continuing to learn about effective business models in Long My town, we were introduced to the model of Mr. Doan Manh Gioi, in Long Phu commune, by the local authorities. Compared to other models, Mr. Gioi's high-tech agricultural production project is quite new, having started operating since March this year. However, the initial results have shown positive signs. Mr. Gioi currently owns 4 duck farms, each about 2,000 square meters wide. Every 2 months, 60,000 ducks are released from the farm, bringing his family a good income.

“I raise ducks according to CP Group’s standards. All ducks are raised in cold houses with plastic floors. All waste is processed into organic fertilizer and used for biogas, so it does not pollute the environment. Each batch exports 4 farms, sells out, then the farms rest for 15 days, then release more. Up to now, the farm has exported 3 batches, according to market prices,” said Mr. Doan Manh Gioi.

Promote collective economy

Mr. Doan Quoc That, Secretary of Long My Town Party Committee, said: The locality focuses on developing cooperatives and cooperative groups. Up to now, the quantity and quality of cooperatives and cooperative groups have increased significantly, the whole town currently has 83 cooperative groups and 32 cooperatives (28 agricultural cooperatives and 4 non-agricultural cooperatives). Through cooperatives, the town has supported people with new, high-quality varieties and supported the application of scientific and technological advances in production. Typically, in 2023, the town supported 4 cooperatives to build a model of quality rice production according to VietGAP process with a scale of 363 hectares. Through the model, the town supported 14 tons of certified rice seeds 1; 144 tons of microbial organic fertilizer.

In addition, the town also coordinates with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the province to support mechanization in production for cooperatives in the area, expected to be implemented in 2024. The town was selected by the province for Thanh Dat Agricultural Service Cooperative to participate in the province's agricultural development project. Through this project, the cooperative will be supported with warehouses, infrastructure, machinery and equipment for agriculture, support for production applying science and technology, digital transformation, etc. It is expected that the project's goals will be completed by 2025. This can be said to be a typical cooperative, a model for expanding cooperative development in the coming time.

“Encourage farmers to cultivate according to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and organic farming to ensure consumer health and protect the environment. Apply science and technology, use new varieties in production to increase productivity and product quality. At the same time, farmers need to join cooperatives and cooperative groups to produce on a large scale, compete and receive support from the State in transferring scientific advances, digital transformation and production support, linking consumption…”, Mr. Doan Quoc That shared.
