Math Genius Becomes Self-Made Billionaire at 24

USA - With assets of 2 billion USD (about 50,770 billion VND), Alexandr Wang became the world's only self-made billionaire under 30 years old in 2024.

In 2021, Scale AI was valued at $7.3 billion (about VND 185,255 billion), as the company's co-founder and CEO, Alexandr Wang officially became the world's youngest self-made billionaire at the age of 24. However, less than a year later, the company's valuation continued to plummet, causing Alexandr Wang to fall off Forbes ' list of billionaires under 30.

After 2 years of absence, in 2024, Scale AI was valued at 13.8 billion USD (about 350,313 billion VND), so Alexandr Wang continued to appear on the list of self-made billionaires under 30 years old. Up to now, he is the only young self-made billionaire in the world to appear on Forbes ' list. Owning 14% of Scale AI's shares, his estimated assets are nearly 2 billion USD (about 50,770 billion VND).

Alexandr Wang was born in 1997, into an intellectual family in Los Alamos (New Mexico, USA). His parents were both physicists, working on weapons projects for the US military. "My parents' work greatly influenced my worldview. My decision to become a programmer was simply because I wanted to make a difference," he shared in a speech at TED .

In middle school, Alexandr Wang started participating in Math and Coding competitions. "I grew up with math. In sixth grade, I entered the Mathcounts competition which was held every year and the prize for the winner was a flight. I wanted to go to Disneyland so I entered," he shared.

At the end of the competition, although he did not win, Alexander Wang left an impression on business managers. With his natural talent, after the competition he received an invitation to work at Addepar company in Silicon Valley as a software engineer.

At the age of 17, while his peers were busy preparing for college applications, Alexandr Wang became a full-time programmer at Quora, an online question-and-answer social networking platform. There, he met Lucy Guo, who would later co-found Scale AI.

In 2015, he was admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), majoring in Machine Learning. However, after finishing his first year, he decided to drop out to start a business. "At that time, I just told my parents that this was a summer job, but I didn't go back to school," Alexandr Wang shared.

With the support of Y Combinator, in the summer of 2016, he and Lucy Guo founded Scale AI, a company specializing in developing image recognition software. Accordingly, Scale AI will build software to replace human work in identifying objects through images, then input this data into the artificial intelligence system used on self-driving cars.

In addition, the company's software can also process language and monitor automated retail systems. Up to now, after 9 years of establishment, Scale AI has covered many fields from administrative management, self-driving car navigation to robot training, virtual reality programming and even in the military .

Currently, Scale AI is considered the cradle of the world's technology industry, in Silicon Valley it is one of the fastest growing companies. In the future, Math genius Alexandr Wang said, Scale AI's mission is to speed up the development of artificial intelligence applications to replace some human jobs.
