According to the Independent on July 21, a source close to the investigation said that South Korean investigators had found "clear evidence" that the pilot of the Jeju Air flight "mistakenly shut down the engine" after the plane hit a bird, leading to the aviation tragedy that killed 179 out of 181 people on board in Muan, South Korea, on December 29, 2024. Data from the black box and physical engine switches found in the wreckage at the scene indicated that the right engine was more severely damaged by the impact, but the pilot turned off the less damaged left engine, the source said. "The investigation team has clear evidence, so the investigation results will not change," said the unnamed source. Photo: Yonhap. However, pilots' unions and victims' families have opposed the report's release, saying its content tends to prematurely blame the pilots without taking other factors into account. Photo: Yonhap. Earlier, at around 9:07 a.m. on December 29, 2024 (local time), a Jeju Air plane carrying 181 people, including 175 passengers and 6 crew members, veered off the runway while landing and crashed into a fence at Musan International Airport in Muan, about 288 km southwest of Seoul. The South Korean National Fire Agency confirmed 179 people died and 2 survived in this aviation tragedy. Photo: Yonhap. The plane crashed while attempting an emergency landing due to a malfunctioning landing gear, after its first landing attempt failed. Photo: Yonhap. The crew chose to land on their belly during the second landing. However, the pilot was unable to reduce speed, veered off the runway, crashed into a fence and burst into flames. Photo: Yonhap.
The then-acting President of South Korea, Mr. Choi Sang Mok, declared seven days of national mourning to remember the victims of the plane crash that killed 179 people on December 29, 2024.
