According to the Independent on July 21, a source close to the investigation said that South Korean investigators had found "clear evidence" that the pilot of the Jeju Air flight "mistakenly shut down the engine" after the plane hit a bird, leading to the aviation tragedy that killed 179 out of 181 people on board in Muan, South Korea, on December 29, 2024. Data from the black box and physical engine switches found in the wreckage at the scene indicated that the right engine was more severely damaged by the impact, but the pilot turned off the less damaged left engine, the source said. Photo: Yonhap.

"The investigation team has clear evidence, so the investigation results will not change," said the unnamed source. Photo: Yonhap.

However, pilots' unions and victims' families have opposed the report's release, saying its content tends to prematurely blame the pilots without taking other factors into account. Photo: Yonhap.
