- "The letters that Major General Hoang Dan and his wife - Mrs. An Vinh wrote to each other over 40 years are a profound proof of their love that spanned two centuries. They knew each other when they were young, became husband and wife in their twenties, but because of the war, their time together was very limited as the general traveled to the most fierce battlefields of Vietnam, while his wife stayed home to raise children, take care of both families and strive for her career. They could only express their longing, anger and waiting through more than 400 letters to each other...

Appointment between Donkeys!...

Major General Hoang Dan (1928 - 2003) is a historical figure. His military career is closely linked to the nation's resistance wars: from Upper Laos in 1953 to Dien Bien Phu in 1954, from Mau Than in 1968 to Quang Tri citadel in the summer of 1972, from the battle of Thuong Duc to the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign, or later the Northern border war in 1979... Mr. Hoang Dan was born in Nghi Thuan commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province. In March 1945, he participated in revolutionary activities and was appointed as a member of the Executive Committee of the Viet Minh Front in Nghi Loc district.

During the August Revolution of 1945, he and his comrades in the Viet Minh Front organized demonstrations, mobilizing the people to rise up and seize power in Nghi Loc district. In February 1946, he joined the army and held the positions of Platoon Leader, Company Political Commissar, Company Leader, and Battalion Leader. During the Dien Bien Phu campaign, he was Deputy Commander of Regiment 57, Division 304.

In 1953, Hoang Dan's family held an engagement ceremony for his hometown lover named An Vinh. At the end of 1953, on December 6, the Politburo and the Party Central Committee decided to launch an offensive campaign to destroy the Dien Bien Phu stronghold in order to liberate the entire Northwest region, creating a new change in the war situation and creating conditions for Laos to liberate Upper Laos. The commander and Party Secretary of the front was General Vo Nguyen Giap. Mr. Hoang Dan was then the Deputy Commander of Regiment 57, under Division 304, assigned to encircle and destroy the enemy in the Hong Cum sub-region.

On May 7, 1954, the resounding victory of the campaign forced the French government to sign the Geneva Accords, ending the war in Indochina. The victory opened a new page for the Vietnamese revolution, as President Ho Chi Minh said: “The victory of Dien Bien Phu is a great victory of our people, and also a common victory of all oppressed peoples around the world.”

In the general joy of the people of the whole country at that time, there was the private joy of “winning the battle and getting married” of soldier Hoang Dan. Throughout the winter of 1953 and the Dien Bien Phu campaign of 1954, Hoang Dan and his fiancee lost contact with each other, none of his letters were answered, making him even more anxious to return home with the desire to marry the person he loved.

His superior at that time was General Hoang Minh Thao, Commander of the 304th Division, who gave him a letter of introduction with very proper and cheerful content: "Introducing comrade Dan to go back to his hometown to get married"!. With his backpack on his shoulder, one person and one vehicle, Hoang Dan cycled straight for more than six hundred kilometers from Dien Bien Phu to Nghe An.

When he arrived at Cua Hoi, he heard that An Vinh had been sent by his agency to Thai Nguyen to study tax affairs. He was extremely disappointed, but Hoang Dan still cycled nearly four hundred kilometers from Nghe An to Hoa Binh and then to Thai Nguyen. When he arrived at An Vinh's school, he heard that she had graduated and was sent to Lang Son to work.

Unable to marry, Hoang Dan returned to his unit and attended a campaign summary meeting in Viet Bac with a restless heart. But then came the good news: the Geneva Accords were signed, Vietnam and France ceased hostilities. The idea of getting married flared up again in the young soldier's heart. He asked his superiors for permission again and found a way to cycle to Lang Son.

After three days of cycling across streams and passes, Hoang Dan arrived at the bustling Ky Lua town after the armistice. He went to the Ky Lua town tax station to ask about An Vinh. Finally, he met his fiancee. It was a day in early August 1954. And finally, the wedding was held simply but joyfully in the mountains and forests of Viet Bac. The Party Secretary of An Vinh's agency had the initiative to use the Independence Day meal standard of September 2 as the wedding meal.

They got married, but kept their promise: both would continue to successfully complete the tasks assigned by their superiors. Therefore, An Vinh continued to stay in Lang Son to work. Chief of Staff, Chief of Operations Hoang Dan returned to his unit.

In early 1955, the Ministry of Defense established the Military School, and Hoang Dan was assigned to Hanoi as a teacher. Every week, he cycled to visit his wife. After work on Saturday, he prepared to leave. The distance from Hanoi to Lang Son was more than 150 kilometers of winding mountain passes, and he had to take a ferry across many rivers: the Red River, the Duong River, the Cau River, the Thuong River, and then through the dangerous and wild Sai Ho Pass, which even had wild animals.

Yet he cycled through the night, arriving in Lang Son town by mid-morning on Sunday. The couple met for a few hours, had a meal together, and told each other many stories. Then at five o'clock in the afternoon, he cycled back to Hanoi at night to be on time for class on Monday morning.

From 1955 to early 1958, soldier Hoang Dan continuously traveled on the “love road” Hanoi - Lang Son like that. Lang Son became a land of affection, a beautiful memory in the love and dedication of General Hoang Dan and his wife, Mrs. An Vinh.

The love story of General Hoang Dan and his wife through the words of his son

On April 6, 2024, the Department of Education and Training of Van Quan district organized the district-level STEM Festival for the 2023-2024 school year, with the theme "Unleashing Creativity - Igniting Passion". The Festival was attended by more than 300 students representing primary and secondary schools in the district and 29 secondary and high schools in and outside the province.

As one of the experts present at the STEM Festival of Van Quan district, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of FPT University, said: “I am extremely impressed with our festival today. I will be extremely proud if the young people and especially the students of Lang Son and Van Quan will step out into this world with their brains, their intelligence, their youth to stand shoulder to shoulder with the world powers. They will be ready for that because today they have learned about artificial intelligence, they have practiced with robots, all of which will kindle in them a belief, an excitement, a passion for the future…”.

Businessman Hoang Nam Tien is known to the public in many positions at FPT Corporation, as well as many impressive and useful shares about business, technology, and education to the community. Mr. Hoang Nam Tien shared: “Lang Son is very familiar to me… In this land of Lang Son, I am very moved because this is also the place associated with my father's military career, bringing many memories to my family…”.

Returning to Hanoi, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien attended the book launch event “Letter for You” (Nha Nam and Writers Association Publishing House) about the love story lasting more than fifty years between Major General Hoang Dan - one of the outstanding generals of the Vietnam People's Army and his wife, Ms. An Vinh - a female National Assembly delegate in the early terms.

The book launch attracted the attention of many readers and the media. “Letter for You” is the first book of businessman Hoang Nam Tien as an author and he is also the youngest son of these two special characters.

“My father is Major General Hoang Dan, my mother is National Assembly delegate Nguyen Thi An Vinh. They became husband and wife on an autumn day in 1954, after my father cycled more than a thousand kilometers to find the person he loved to marry.” That is how author Hoang Nam Tien begins his parents’ wartime love story in the book “Letter for You.”

The story is told through more than four hundred handwritten letters written in haste over more than forty years by Major General Hoang Dan and Mrs. An Vinh. The love story appears with all the emotions of two people in long-distance relationships, with longing and anger, but more than that, it is a pure and strong love story, spanning through battles, difficult and challenging periods of the country. Their love story is also the story of a generation, a historical period of the nation.

“Letter to You” is a story about the love and marital relationship of Major General Hoang Dan and his wife from when they first met each other until the years they were married, had children but still had to live in constant separation.

Their feelings can only be sent in letters back and forth, spanning important historical milestones of the nation such as the Dien Bien Phu victory in 1954, the Route 9 - Khe Sanh campaign in 1968, Quang Tri in 1972, the liberation of Saigon in 1975, the battle to protect the northern border in 1979... That love story has created a true and romantic "love story".

While the general fought in the fiercest battlefields, his wife, Nguyen Thi An Vinh, stayed home and gave birth three times alone, taking care of the family, raising the children, and constantly striving in studying and working, to also have a respectable career of her own.

During the years of separation, the nostalgic, passionate, romantic letters became the thread that tightened the love between the two. The story of General Hoang Dan and Mrs. An Vinh is therefore not only the story of a young couple, a married couple, but the love of an entire generation, an unforgettable historical period of the country: “The first kiss I placed on your lips that day... perhaps that day also marked a new step in our relationship, right? Two days later I went to Mau Lam and said goodbye to you to go to school. That morning you woke up to cook rice for me and we talked and promised each other. You must have been angry with me: “You fulfilling your duty is enough, I will love you forever, even if we are far apart or if you are injured, I will still love you with all my heart”. I remember that, and I also believe that”. (Letter of General Hoang Dan to his wife An Vinh, May 28, 1955).

According to the letters Mr. and Mrs. Hoang Dan - An Vinh sent to each other in "Letter for you" and the memories of their son Hoang Nam Tien, during his entire military career of more than thirty years on the battlefield, General Hoang Dan never had a Tet holiday at home - with his wife and children. Mrs. An Vinh, while striving to do her best in carrying out her duties, was also resourceful and sacrificed to take care of the house so that her husband could work with peace of mind... Their extraordinary efforts became touching lessons about patience and sacrifice for family and society during a special historical period of the nation.

Admitting that his parents' love had "romantic revolutionary inspiration", author Hoang Nam Tien chose a classic quote from Soviet literature as the introduction to the book "Letter to You": "The years will pass, the wars will gradually quiet down, the revolutions will stop screaming, and your gentle, patient and loving heart will remain intact...".

“I wrote this story to leave a memory for myself, my family and for myself personally, I wrote to understand more about love. I hope readers, especially young people, believe that love is real in life!”… - Author Hoang Nam Tien.
