Harvesting according to technical standards - maintaining the brand "Son La Coffee"

Son La is entering the 2025-2026 coffee harvest season in the context of record high purchasing prices, from 25,000-30,000 VND/kg of fresh fruit, bringing excitement to farmers. Coffee processing enterprises guide farmers in Ten Hia village, Muong Chanh commune to harvest coffee.

The province currently has 24,300 hectares of coffee, mainly concentrated in the communes of Muong Chanh, Chieng Mai, Chieng Mung, Muoi Noi, Thuan Chau, Sop Cop and the wards of Chieng Coi and Chieng An... the output in the 2025-2026 crop year is estimated to reach more than 37,700 tons of beans. According to experts, the increase in coffee prices is due to the decrease in the world's coffee supply, along with the US imposing a high tax of up to 50% on Brazilian coffee, causing global coffee prices to fluctuate strongly.

In reality, harvesting ripe coffee brings clear economic value, but in some localities, there is still a situation of mass harvesting, mixed with many green fruits, accounting for 20-25%. According to businesses, the high price of coffee makes people want to harvest early, but picking green fruits will reduce output, with a loss of over 10%; affecting the quality of beans and the growth of trees in the following crops.

Faced with this situation, the People's Committee of Son La province has directed to strengthen the management of coffee harvesting, preliminary processing and processing to ensure the standards of TCVN 9278:2012. In particular, people only harvest ripe coffee beans, ensuring that the ripeness rate must reach 95% or more, meeting the requirements of producing high-quality specialty coffee for the domestic and export markets. In particular, do not pick green beans to avoid damaging branches and leaves, affecting the yield of the next crop.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment is assigned to preside over and coordinate with units and localities to guide households to properly implement harvesting, processing and preservation procedures. Require processing facilities and enterprises to strictly comply with regulations on quality and environmental protection; at the same time, publicize violations on mass media.

The People's Committees of communes and wards guide and direct enterprises, cooperatives and people to harvest and process coffee according to standards; publicize the list of organizations and individuals who purchase green coffee beans, reducing quality and affecting the "Son La Coffee" brand. Village chiefs are responsible for inspecting and supervising the improper harvesting of green and young coffee beans. Require organizations and individuals who purchase, process and process coffee beans in the area to purchase coffee beans that meet standards, ensuring processing quality; commit not to purchase young or poor quality beans to limit the situation of people picking green coffee beans.

Along with that, the Department of Agriculture coordinates with localities to propagate and guide people to harvest properly; apply 4C, UTZ, RA processes... to form high-quality coffee areas. At the same time, functional units strengthen market inspection and supervision, prevent trade fraud and illegal purchasing, protect the interests of farmers and businesses.
