At 1 p.m., the water receded, leaving behind shimmering tidal flats, revealing clam beds during harvest season... Photo: TP At noon, the temperature is nearly 40 degrees, dozens of workers still stick to the tidal flats of Van Hai (Quynh Luu) to harvest in time according to the tide. Clam harvesting depends on the "breathing rhythm" of the sea. Photo: TP In recent years, clam suction machines have been used to increase harvesting productivity in deep water areas. However, this method is only suitable for certain areas, when the tide has not yet receded. Therefore, people still mainly harvest clams manually. Photo: TP This job requires endurance, meticulousness and experience in observing the characteristics of each beach. Photo: TP Familiar tools are aluminum spoons to dig sand, baskets to pick up clams and fishing bags to hold clams. Photo: TP After harvesting, clams are washed clean of sand at the beach, waiting for traders to weigh them on the spot. Photo: TP Each clam raking worker is paid according to output, on average 200,000 VND/quintal. Photo: TP Currently, the price of clams at the wharf is 15,000 VND/kg - the highest price in many years. Photo: TP Mr. Nguyen Van Hoang - owner of a 15-hectare clam farm in Van Hai, happily said that this crop, each hectare harvested 15-18 tons of clams. With high yields and good prices, he mobilized more labor to speed up the harvest. "Now it's the hot season, with strong consumption, I mobilized nearly 30 workers to stick to the tidal flats to harvest clams," Mr. Hoang said excitedly. Photo: TP Next to the fields being harvested are areas that have just been stocked with clams. Raising clams using the alternating cropping method helps maintain continuous production, so that the market does not suffer from a supply shortage. Photo: TP Mr. Ho Xuan Ninh - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Van Hai Commune (Quynh Luu) said: "The whole commune currently has about 80 hectares of clam farming with 20 production households. Clams are purchased and consumed by traders nationwide. Many households here have escaped poverty and become well-off thanks to clam farming. In addition, clam farming also creates jobs for many local workers." Photo: TP
