EUR/USD world exchange rate today 5/13/2025
EUR/USD is falling sharply again after the previous session's rally, currently trading around 1.1121
The euro came under pressure after European Central Bank (ECB) official Olli Rehn said the ECB could consider cutting interest rates at its upcoming meeting if further forecasts confirm deflationary trends and a slowing economy .
However, the pair still received some support from positive developments in trade negotiations between the US and China in Geneva, with both sides saying they had made “significant progress” after two days of work.
Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng called it an “important first step” in stabilizing relations between the two countries. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent agreed, highlighting the positive signals from this round of dialogue.
Markets are closely watching the US response to the European Commission’s latest move. On Thursday, the EU launched a public consultation on imposing tariffs on up to €95 billion worth of US imports, in case trade talks with the US collapse.
Meanwhile, the US economy still faces many uncertainties. Some Federal Reserve officials have warned of the risk of “stagflation.” Governor Michael Barr noted that imposing more tariffs could disrupt supply chains, causing higher inflation, while slowing growth and increasing unemployment. In that context, investors remain cautious because the risk of escalating trade tensions could continue to put pressure on the US economy.
