Officials in Zhaoyuan City, Shandong Province, have attracted attention by offering a 25kg gold bar to the first person who can lift it with one hand.
Zhaoyuan City’s Culture and Tourism Bureau launched a contest on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, earlier this month to find someone who could lift a 25-kilogram gold bar with one hand. The bar is estimated to be worth 10 million yuan ($1.5 million) and will be displayed in the city’s gold museum.
After successfully lifting the gold bar with one hand, the contestant must also hold the bar in the air for 25 seconds to receive the prize. The promotional video features the head of the city's Department of Culture and Tourism, Chi Yixian, who uses both hands to lift the gold bar.
After Mr. Chi, everyone else who participated in the challenge also couldn't lift the gold bar with one hand. The video shows that only one old man successfully completed the challenge, surprising everyone, but the gold bar he lifted was actually a fake version, much lighter.

The video currently has more than 500,000 likes and 100,000 comments.
In fact, the challenge has been running at the museum since 2009 and has yet to find a winner. Many people believe that the city's filming of a promotional video featuring officials is a refreshing approach, showing its friendly side. Zhaoyuan City is known for its gold mines and is known as the "gold capital of China".
However, some commentators said that there was no point in holding a contest without a winner. Meanwhile, others supported the challenge. "The point is not to find a winner, but to give people a chance to see and touch the gold bar," one commenter said.
